During the past nine months the number of fires in Oamaru has been greater than during the previous seven years.—North Otago Times. At a recent meeting of the Taieri Agricultural Society, Mr D. Reid, jnr., M.H.R., was appointed a delegate to attend the Agricultural Conference in Wellington. One of the features of the Salvation Army progress has been not merely an improvement in the musical abilities of its bandsmen,, but the great growth in their numbers. It iS stated that ten years ago General Booth's organisation had in Great Britain 9,700 bandsmen, and that now there are close upon 13,500. It may be added that these bandsmen do not receive pay, but, on the conti'ary, have to contribute towards the expenses of the Army. Moreover, they are something more than musicians.. They are expected to exercise spiritual influence over those under their charge. At a musical festival recently held in the Congress Hall, Clapton, no fewer than 160 bandsmen took part and all were pledged abstainers from intoxicants and, tobacco. A peculiar feature of the working of the cropping conditions under the Government's land policy was brought under the notice of the Minister for .Lands during his visit to the Feilding district, says a contemporary. The cropping regulations require tliat half the area of a section shall be put down in permanent pasture. One man went in for an orchard, and. was very successful with fifteen acres laid down, in fruit trees. He- is anxious to extend the orchard by utilising: other parts of his land for| this purpose, but has received notice that he 1 cannot do this, and that half of his property must be kept in permanent pasture, so, instead of being able to take advantage of the better market that is offering for fruit, he is obliged to use it for grazing land only. The matter is engaging the attention of the Minister, with a view to making an amendment in the law to meet such cases.
