ACCIDENT IN A .SHAFT. Received April 4,19.48.a.m. PERTH, April 4. A cage in the shaft .of the Waroonga mine, containing three men, named Owens, Andrevle, and .Cattaveo, tilted, and fatally jammed vbne of the men against the timber lining the shaft. The other two men werejpreqipitated to the bottom of the shaft.
IMMIGRATION TEST. Received April 4, 9.48 a,m. PERTH, April 4. The .officials prevented the Rev. Goliath Joseph, a member of the Anglican Church in Armenia, from landing, on the ground that he failed to pass the necessary dictation test. The Rev. Joseph is one of several Armenian clergymen sent by the Anglican Church .of Armenia to various parts of the world to do mission work amongst the Armenians. SYDNEY SHOW, Received Aprii 4, 7.57 a m, SYDNEY, April 4. The receipts"at the Royal Agricultural Show amounted to £8,650, surpassing the previous year's receipts by £550. At the fat sheep sales, Mr Johns, of New Zealand, secured the record price of 565. NAVAL OFFICER'S SUICIDE. Received April 4, 7.57 a.m. SYDNEY, April 4. Lieutenant Kingston, of the Royal Navy, who recently arrived from England to recruit his health, committed suicide with a revolver.
VALUE OF VOLUNTEERS. Received April 4, 7.57 a.m. SYDNEY, April 4. Colonel Robin, First Military Member of the New Zealand Council of Defence, is availing himself of every opportunity to witness the training of the various branches of the troops. He told an interviewer that he had heard many pessimistic views expressed by folks in Australia who really knew nothing at all about military work, but he did not think that if they had seen the work carried out that day they could have any cause of complaint.
TRAVELLING WITHOUT A TICKET. Received April 4, 7.57 a.m. SYDNEY, April 4. A man named Coleman was fined £lO for travelling on the mail steamer Sonoma from Auckland without having a ticket. He told the court that he went aboard the Sonoma to get a job, but at the last moment ,a man who was to have done the work turned up. In the meantime the steamer had started. .GREAT INCREASE IN FEDERAL REVENUE. Received April 4, 8.10 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 4. The Commonwealth revenue for the nine months of the current financialyear increased by nearly half a million. '
REGULARITY MORE IMPORTANT THAN FREIGHT. Received April 4, 8.10 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 4. The Butter Freights Committee decided to cancel the contract for the carriage of butter with the White Star and Aberdeen Lund lines from October Ist. The committee considers that the irregularity of arrival of the vessels in London outweighs the advantage of cheapness of freights.
INTER-STATE BOWLING. Received April 4, 10.31 p.m. SYDNEY, April 4. In the Inter-State bowling match New South Wales defeated Victoria by 99 to 92. The local team won two out of the three games. YEARLING SALES. Received April 5, 1.5 a.m. SYDNEY, April 4. At the yearling sales a brother of Haut Boy brought 726 guineas, and a brother of Istria 700 guineas. AN APPOINTMENT. Received April 5, 1.4 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 4. Mr Elwood Mead, Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department at Washington, has been appointed Chairman of the Victorian Rivers and Water Supply Commission, at a salary of £1,200 per annum. SHIPPING.
