THE BALLINGER BELT

By Telegraph—Press Association.

WELLINGTON, March 26,

At the banquet given to Ballinger Bros., the well-known rifle shots, Arthur, who won the belt outright at Trentham, said with reference to the future maintenance of the belt he.felt that to keep it would rob the Association and the meeting of some of their interest. He had, therefore, decided to present it to the Association on condition that in the future it be called "The Ballinger Champion Belt." The Hon. J. Carroll, responding to a toast, said they realised that the first line of defence must be on sea, but behind that they must be strong on land. This could only be brought about by cultivating nerve, resolution, self-control, and patriotism, and rifle practice. There was a time in the history of this country when he took part in a six months' fighting expedition. Then the oldfashioned weapons contrasted strangely with the fighting machines d'f today, but the quality of men remained the same. Colonel Collins, the executive officer of the Rifle Association, in thankr ing Mr Ballinger for his generous "gift,, said he thought there should be a condition that if the competitions ever lapsed for two years in succession, the belt should revert to the Ballinger family. ,
