MUNICIPAL BRASS BAND.
ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. The annual smoke concert of the Masterton Municipal Brass Band was held in the Park Tea Kiosk, last evening. The attendance numbered about seventy, including representatives of the Carterton Band, Masterton Fire Brigade and Fire Police, New Plymouth, Gisborne, Fitzroy and Paeroa Fire Brigades, who are returning i'rom the Fire Brigades' Demonstration in Christchurch. The Borough Council was represented by Crs J. C. Ewington, T. G. Hoar, E. McEwen, and W. Morris. Apologies for absence were received from Crs Eton, Temple, and Elliott. Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., was in the chair. The toast of "The King" was proposed by the Chairman. He commented in terms of praise on the present efficient state of the Band, and the value of their services to the town. He also complimented them on their success at the recent Exhibition Contest. Cr McEwen proposed the toast of "The Member for the District," and paid a tribute to Mr Hogg's services to the district during the sixteen years he had represented it in Parliament.
Mr Hogg, during the course of his reply, referred to his first entry into Parliament and compared the state of affairs that existed then with those existing now. He traced the many reforms that had taken place during those years, and added that his best services would always be in the direction of not only helping his own constituency but the colony as a whole. Mr F. W. G. McLeod, in proposing the toast of "The Masterton Borough Council," took the opportunity to thank the Council for the many services they had rendered the band.
Crs McEwen, [Ewington, Morris and Hoar replied. Each speaker referred favourably to the Band's services to the town, and promised them further support. The other toasts honoured during the evening were: "Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade," the Chairman—Captain Jenkins; "The Masterton Municipal Brass Band," Cr Morris—Mr F. W. G. McLeod; "The Visiting Firemen," Cr Ewington— Messrs Wildish (Gisborne), Saddler (New Plymouth), Griffiths (Fitzroy), and Brennan (Paeroa); "The Carterton Brass Band," The ChairmanMr R. Crawley; "Press," Bandmaster Hutchinson; "The Ladies," Mr C. H. Gardner—Messrs H. Blockley and J. Prentice.
Songs were sung by Messrs W. Norman, 11. Blockley, E. McEwen, W. Morris; A. W. Hogg, J. Thompson and G. Groombridge. Mr Blockley also gave a recitation. The gathering concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
