MASTERTON RIFLE VOLUNTEERS.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Masterton Rifle Volunteer Corps was held in the Drill Hall last evening. Captain Charters occupied the chair, and there was an attendance of about thirty members. Captain Charters, in giving a brief resume of the past year's work, said that the present strength of the corps was 44. The strength had been reduced on acccount of a number of the members having been discharged for I not attending parades and failing to capitate. There was room in the corps now for a number of recruits, but care was going to be exercised in selecting the right class of recruit. With regard to the future work of the corps, Captain Charters said that he did not intend to hold much "barracks square" instruction this year,, Instead, there would be more work in connection with the movements of scouts. He intended to give several ' lectures on the work of scouts, and, when possible, to take the members out in the open and put into practice what was learnt at the lectures. It ; was also intended to establish a library during the winter for the benefit of the men. He urged the men to be regular in their attendance at parades, and to infuse more interest into rifle shooting. He announced that the corps were in possession of two Morris tubes and the members should take up Morris tube shooting during the coming winter. The balance sheet showed that the corps, after paying off all liabilities, had a credit balance of about £IOO. The following committees were elected:—Shooting Committee: Captain Charters, Lieutenants Morton and Brighting, Sergeants Sayer, Ayson, and Perry, Corporal Cole, Privates Pickering, Smith and Wintringham, and Bugler Harding. Volunteer Committee: Colour-Ser-geant Morton, Privates Braggins, Prentice, Rees, Scales and C. Munn. Sergeant Ayson was re-elected secretary. Azale was elected an honorary member of the corps. At the conclusion of the business of the meeting, the toast of the King was honoured. The evening was then spent in v. convivial manner.
