COST OF CHARITABLE AID.

NEXT YEAR'S ESTIMATES. The balance-sheet of the Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board for the period between April Ist, 1906, and January 31st," 1907, shows that the receipts totalled £9,286 14s lid, including a balance of £1,099 3s 8d on April Ist, £1,521 Is 9d received from the City Council; and Government subsidies amounting to £3,822 7s 9d. The total contributions by local bodies were £3,738 6s 6d. The expenditure was £8,741 2s, leaving a balance of £545 12s lid. The principal items of expenditure •were:—Wellington Benevolent Institution £3,750, Wellington Receiving Home £2,331 13s 3d, Wairarapa North Benevolent Institution £SOO. Following are the estimates for 1907-8, those for the past year being given in parentheses:—Wellington Benevolent Institution, £4,000 (£4,500); Wairarapa North Benevolent Institution, £6OO (£600); Wellington Receiving Home, £3,5.00 (£2,824); Christchurch Receiving Home, £55 (£90); St. Joseph's Orphanage, £2OO (£200); St. Mary's Industrial School, £195 (£180); Auckland Industrial School, £45 (£40); Burnham Industrial School, £2O; Weraroa Boys' Training Farm,

Last year's apportionment amounted to £4,984 8s Bd. One-half the total amount required each year is found by Government. The annual meeting of the board at which above figures were considered, was held, at Wellington, .yesterday. There were present:— Messrs R: C. Kirk (chairman), W. C. Buchanan, A. W. Hogg, R. Smith, F. Cohen, D. M'Laren, W. H. Morrah and Coles. The balance-sheet and the estimates -and apportionment were adopted.
