MASTERTON RACES.

FIRST DAY.

The Autumn Meeting of the Masterton Racing Club was opened, yesterday, on the Opaki course. Glorious weather prevailed, and there was \ an average attendance of the public. The course was on the heavy side, but improved during the day. Today the running should be fast. Large fields faced the barrier for all the flatjevents, and the racing proved interesting. Some good finishes were witnessed, notably in the March Handicap, where Sunbonnet, Sherlock Holmes and Maui passed the post on apparently level terms, after a splendid run down the straight. The Cup was won by Riflemaid by two lengths. The new scales were used for the first time, and proved a great convenience. The amount invested on the totalisator was £6,586, as against £6,648 which was the amount put. through on the corresponding day last year. The secretary (Mr A. Hathaway) carried out his duties in a creditable manner, and had all the arrangements complete. He was ably assisted by Mr W. Gillespie. During the afternoon several selections were rendered on the lawn by Mr Reihana Boyes' string band. The amount taken at the outside gates was £54 Is 6d, and at the grandstand and saddling paddock £47 Bs. At the last meeting £32 12s 6d was taken at the outside gates, and £23 3s 6d at the grandstand and saddling paddock.
