RAILWAY APPEAL BOARD.
By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 21. A sitting of the South Island Railway Appeal Board opened, to-driy, when an appeal by W. McLeod, excadet, against his dismissal was heard. The circumstances of the case showed that on December 24th, at Wakouaiti, McLeod lowered a signal to clear without first ascertaining whether the line was clear. As a matter of fact, the porters, who had been shunting a few hours previously, neglected to lock the points, and as a result of the clear signal the driver of a goods train ran into the points standing at half-cock, the engine and J;wo waggons being derailed. For the appellant, it was contended that he .simply carried out the instructions of the stationmaster, and that the punishment was more severe than the circumstances warranted. Decision was reserved.
