OBITUARY.

MARCELIN BERTHELOT. Received March 20, 8.38 a.m. PARIS, March 19. Marcelin Berthelot, the famous French savant, died of heart failure, a few -moments after his wife had succumbed. COUNT LAMSDORFF. Received March 20, 10.37 p.m. LONDON, March 20. The death is announced of Count Lamsdorff. (A cablegram in yesterday's Age stated that it had been reported that an attempt had been made to poison Count Lamsdorff. The deceased, who was formerly Russian Minister of Foreign affairs, was born in December, 1842. In 1866 he entered the Home Office, in 1872 was made Second Secretary of the Foreign Office, and in 1875 became First Secretary. In 1878 he accompanied Prince Gortschakoff to the Berlin Congress, and for some years afterwards was almost constantly in attendance upon Alexander 11. After the accession of Alexander 111. he was appointed Director of the Chancellerie at the Foreign Office, and again was in constant attendance on his sovereign. When Count Muravieff became Minister of Foreign Affairs, Count Lamsdorff was appointed assistant Minister, and when his chief died (1900) he succeeded him. He accompanied the Czar to France in 1901, and in 1902 made a tour of the Near East in connection with the Macedonian question. In 1906 he was succeeded by M. Izvolsky.)
