FAIR PLAY(?).
(To the Editor). Sir,—Aha! At last! at last! After all these long years of patient investigation and study, the great Chow question is solved by a resident of Tinui, under the nom-de-nonsenseof "Fairplay," and the whole universe stands appalled at the mighty.'and majestic mentality that has at Ikst solved the difficult question that is perplexing the greatest statesmen throughout the world. Great and wondrous Saul, in all my humbleness and simplicity I salute thee! Trul'sr r how wonderful! how inspiring! how thrilling! How great and glorious is thy vast and mighty achievement,, and I command the nubble inhabitants of this mighty universe to bow low before thy great and glorious Majesty, and pay homage to thee,, great Saul. How puny, how insignificant, flow paltry are we all before thee! Great and wondrous Oracle,, open the storehouse of thy vast thought reservoir, and let us drink in and refresh our thirsty and empty knowledge-boxes. Great philosopher; the secret of the yellow plague is apparently solved by a resident of fair Zealand'ia. Indeed, you have made us famous—l don't think. So our charming fellow pig-tailed citizen a real good sort, eh? Truly, how refreshing the knowledge is, and I. have been studying the yellow qpes tion for years, and I humbly and respectfully beg to differ, and t® quietly state that the Chinalander is one of the greatest curses Maoriland knows of; in fact, not only a menace to trade, but to our white women and children —when the chance arises-.' How often does that occur? Now we will have it, and now we will have facts. I say in thousands-of cases in the Australasian colonies alone. Thousands of cases, yes, thousands; and yet "Fairplay" stands for the Chinkey. So my dear friend, there are other places on the map besides Masterton, and for years I have been a resident of the other places. When I make such a statement before thousands of an intelligent audience, I must know from positive knowledge what I am writing of, and yet the women stand about with their family- lilts a d stick to the Chow and dessert the white man in these grand islands—the "Chow's Own Country." Pferfraps the lover of fair play would' l'ike us to have a yellow Prime Minister and a yellow Governor. What is meant by niggers owning the best part of this island? I presume- that is a slur on the noble Maori race, from whom we borrowed the: broad acres of New Zealand. I object humbly to the word "nigger," although I would not be averse to apply the word "traitor" to our "Fairplay" friend for making use of such an expression. Come from behind your nom -deplume, and call this- greatest of all coloured races "niggers," and I predict that you will quickly have apartments in the hospital or the cemetery. The Native race of this country is a king compared to the scum of Asia that "Fairplay" screams for justice for; yes, a real noble king of kings, and we owe him every respect. Why, he and she is miles even ahead of the white resident. Look how they greet each other and show an affection and kindness to each other almost unknown of the greater portion of the white population. We strut around with our noses in the ah\ whilst the Maoris greet each | other with every affection, but I will | not 1 enlarge on the' Natives' good j qualities ;*but I would riather have one | hundred qrje Chow and I his dear friend "F?iirpiay,"i as they | are jboth ,a pest to the. country. How easy it is to slate a public man and a member of J Pai*liaihent behind a nom-de-plume ■ of' "Fairplay?" Is that .pjay.%j*■■i'dofr'tthjnk ,s6. No, np f t{ie,,bpy ; c9,i;|; ; .fair deal ,\Y.itb the GhoWs.k. ; lt is far more humane: than jthe methods adopted a, the time of the-Boxer moye'ment in China. If' ,: th 6' ChoW' cbuld have
managed it, he would have cut every white down to the ground on that occasion. They don't believe in the boycott, apparently, but resort to the guncott. New Zealand is open to the Chow by paying the poll-tax. but China is not open to the New Zealander except at special places if he were willing to pay thousands of pounds, and this answer will, also, suffice for the yellow man who interrupted a recent meeting in Masterton on the subject. If the white mail goes to China, that is not our fault or the Chow's either. He would prevent it if he could, and does prevent him as far as he dare. As regards the Chinaman being a fair dealer and a good peaceful citizen, that is rubbish, The Chinaman is a real gilt-edged prize rogue, a swindler at evsry point ofthe'compass that he can manage, and a sweater and under-cutter, and, disgusting to relate, he takes every advantage he can of our white children. Children! And yet a being signing himself "Fairplay" has the infernal insolence and effrontery to defend him. The Chow is going tQ gtt a rude awakening, and Mastei'tofl is ing its share apparently, and when' I read that a certain public gentleman may be "brought to see the error of his ways and be wise," it is time to ask "Fairplay" to be ditto. I think lie is not wise—but otherwise* —I aril, etc*, ARTHUR PICARD. New Plymouth, March 15, 1907. P.S.— Apart from the above, this writer can honestly compliment Masterton on the stand it is taking on the yellow-curse question. Fire away, I say, and "Kia Ora" and every success to your grand efforts. I think there will be a big rift in the clouds next session, Which John will "no likee."—A.P.
