(The world's record for 100 yards is held by C. M. Daniels, New York, who swam the distance in 57 3-ssec. The previous best Australasian record W2S 58§ cc » held by R, Cavill and c. MELBOURNE, March 16. The Governor-General has tendered the Commonwealth's sympathy with the French people in the loss of the Jena. TECHNICAL EXHIBIT. SYDNEY, March 16. The Minister for Public Instruction has approved the handing over, to the Seddon Technical College, of the plumbing and engineering exhibit from the Sydney Technical College, which is displayed at the Christchurch Exhibition. VICTORIAN ELECTIONS. MELBOURNE, March 16. ' r The State elections arc the quietest in the history of the State. They represent the triumph of sitting members, and parties on present figures *re practically as they were. Labour j lost Geelong, Baliarat West, and Jikajika seats, but gained Eaglehawk and Bendigo East. Mr G. M. Prendegast, Leader of the Labour.Party, has been returned for North; Melbourne. One of the incidents of the election was, the defeat of Mr Judkins for Brunswick, Mr Anstey (Labour) winning with a majority of over 700. Approximate figures show the posiions to be as follows: Ministerial' 51 i Labour or Opposition ... 14 Mv Bent, Premier, will leave for London ?iext week to arrange a number -..f i financial matters, to initiate the immigration policy, and to. investigate the Attorney-General. Williamson states that one fact which struck him forcibly during his tour of New Zealand was the tourist traffic, which is managed marvellously well. He witnessed no poverty in New' Zealand. He speaks favourably of the municipal theatre at Wanganui, and thinks its success should municipalities to act in the same direction.
