MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee, held last evening, was attended by Messrs R. Brown (chairman), E. H. Waddington, C. Perry, J. Carpenter, ( W. Gillespie, and W. A. Fendall. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £2l lis lOd. The Chairman and the Headmaster were appointed a committee to confer _ with Mr A. W. Hogg in connection "'A with holding B. Syverstoirs scholar- > ship over for a year, and making it ■<. tanable at Victoria College. The Headmaster reported as follows: —Attendance, Main School, roll 697, average attendance 539, percentage of attendance 89; Side School, roll 169, average attendance 153, percentage of attendance 90; Secandary Classes, roll 76, average attendant 73, percentage of attendance 96. The attendance during the month iua been very satisfactory. The throo companies of the Masterton School Cadets left for the Battalion Encampment at Christchurch, on Thursday, the 21st ul't., and returned to Mastertors on Friday, the Ist inst. *1 arranged for the whole of the mab assistants on the staff to accompany the boys. Excellent .-_ x sup2rvii;ion was maintained and the \ lads were well cared for. In connection with their visit to the Exhibition Mr G. S. W. Dalrymple has generously offered three prizes of 10s each to the Cadets for competition in essay writing. The examination for these prizes will be conducted during the next few days. The school excursion, on Monday, the 25th ulty proved very enjoyable. Plenty of seating accommodation was provided, and the provision for entraining was satisfactory. Tv o large cas-js of fruit of splendid quality and a brge tin of biscuits were i kindly provided by Messrs J. C. \ Ewington and G. A. Olliver.* lam glad to report that I have been able to complete the formation of, the front portion of the school garden grounds. A large quantity of rough road spoil has been carted in to build ujj the paths, and 100 loads of better spoil for the beds. The material for this work was promised by the Mayor for the Borough Council when the siction was taken in hand for the formation of a garden. The portion of the ground just completed will be used for -the cultivation of native flora. Although the work in connec- • tion with the experimental plots was -f started late in the spring season good results have been obtained. In connection with the late A. and P. Show produce from the plots secured the following prizes:—Potatoes, first and third prizes; runner beans, first, second and third prizes; dwarf \ beans, second and third prizes; lettuces, first and second prizes; broad beans, second and only _ prize. I have received from the Mauriceville Lime Company, per Messrs J. D. Cruickshank and Company, three large sacks of lime for the garden plots. A nutnber of repairs to asphalt, etc., have been effected during the past'fortnight. The leaks in the roof have not yet been stopped, and there are one or two matters at the Side * School that need attention. It was decided to thank Messrs G. S. W. Dalrymple, J. C. Ewington and G. A. Olliver, -nd the Mauriceville Lime Company for their donations to the School. It was resolved to appiy to the Borough Council fcr a refund of amount paid for road spoil as a quantity of spoil was premised the Com- • mittee by the Mayor, and had not been given. Messrs Bro-.vn, CaYpentar and dall were appointed the , visiting members for the ensuing month. Accounts amounting to ££o 12s 6d were passed for payment.
