COUNCIL MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday aftertoon. There were pre-Bent-Crs W. H. Bee,h.an -(chairman), W. J. Welch W. Harris, J. . Morris, H. 0. Toogood, C. Ketbell, and A. Murray. Apologies, for absence were received from Crs -#* Cock bum-Hood and Guild. Mr W Boustead wrote Reporting ""that Messrs Hall and Harding had been licensed by the Eketahuna ■ County to engage in heavy traffic and they'were carting on the Masterton County roads. The letter was received. . T „ A letter was received from Mr U E. Daniell stating that steps were being taken to remove the tramway from the Weraiti Road. Messrs H. G. and A. Williams applied for permission to erect temporary gates on the Weraiti -Fcrnyhurst road. Permission was granted to \ erect the gates. ■ Mr Walter Fly wrote requesting the Council to make proposals for expending his thirds in metallmgon Saunders' Road. The Council decided to write to' the Land Board asking them to accede to Mr Fly's request Messrs W. J. Turkington and C. H. Cox, of Hinemoa, Pahiatua, wrote drawing the Council's attention to the condition of two bridges on the road giving access to their property. ' The matter was left in the hands of the representatives for the riding. Mr E. Jewitt wrote, on behalf of himself and others, protesting against a casual surfaceman being employed : . V to supervise the metalling of the ''' n Utewai road. The Engineer considered that there was no ground for complaint, as the surfaceman was a competent man. The matter was left in the hands of the Engineer. A letter was received from Mr J. H. Tatham, of Homebush, stating • that the settlers had not consented to diverting the Patanui bridge grant to metalling the Long Hill deviation. The Akatarawa Timber Company wrote enquiring whether the Council required any birch timber for bridge decking, and what price the Council was prepared to pay for it. No action was taken in the matter. ii The Engineer was instructed to * proceed with the work of forming the approaches to the Alfredton Town Hall - . tw . It was decided to dispense with the ' services of the County Ranger at the end of the month, and to call fresh ! applications for the position. The Council resolved to instruct the Clerk to write to Mrs Nicholls thanking her for her valuable services as a rem-esentative of the Council on the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society. Mr J. Barr, Lansdowne, wrote informing the Council that he was about to fill up the depression on his land, which would drain the water back on to the road. The matter was left in the hands of Crs Welch and T* Harris. The Chief Engineer of Roads wrote stating that authority to expend grants, under which no liability had been entered into by March 21st, ' would be cancelled; but may be reinstated on approval after March 31st.
