SERIOUS TRAMWAY ACCIDENT.

6 CHRISTCHURCH, March 11
A serious tramway accident occurred, a few minutes before.nine o'clock to-night, the victim being Mr Benjamin Pilkington, 1 who for a number of years was stationmaster at Christchurch, but who retired some time ago. Mr Pilkington was returning from town to his home at Richmond on the steam tram, and appears either to have fallen or jumped off before a stoppage had been effected, and the wheels of the car passed over his feet.
Mr] Pilkington was immediately taken to the hospital, where it was found that the amputation of both feet was imperative. The operation was performed, but the patient's condition afterwards was grave in the extreme.
