FATAL ACCIDENT.
MAN KILLED AT MANGAMAHOE. A fatal accident occurred at Mangamahoe on Saturday morning in which a man named William Bowman lost his life. Bowman, who was employed at Mrs Carroll's lime-kiln, was engaged in blasting a log, which had fallen across a creek about a mile above the Mangamahoe Railway Staticr, when the charge of gelatine, which he was using, went off suddenly and Bowman received the full force of the explosion. The unfortunate man was terribly injured. He was taken to the Mauriceville Hotel, by Thomas Carroll, and Dr. Ross, of Masterton, was communicated with. The doctor wag unable to reach Mauriceville until after two o'clock in the afternoon, by which time the injured man had succumbed to his injuries. William Hutton, who was working near the deceased at the time of the accident, thought that Bowman must have gone back to the log after lighting the charge to see why it did not explode. The deceased was 40 years of age, and was a single man. He was a native of Denmark, having been in the colony about ten years. He had been employed at the lime-kiln for some months past.
An inquest was held at the Mauriceville Hotel, yesterday, before Mr W. P. James, Coroner, and the following jury:—Charles J. Brooks (foreman), George Dryden, William Barber, Claude Spackman, James Goodgame and Waldemar Mortesen. Evidence was given by William Hutton, who was working with, the deceased, Lars Kjar, who was working about a chain away, Thomas Carroll, who took the deceased to Mauriceville, and Mrs Carroll, owner of the lime-kiln. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
