THE SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. INVERCARGILL, March 10. The butchers held a meeting here on Saturday to consider possible terms on which arrangements might be come to with the companies. Three delegates afterwards conferred with the manager of the Southland Frozen Meat Company, but no compromise could be arranged. The companies could make no better offer than before, and this the men, following the lead of the northern men, have rejected. They had hoped the companies would separate themselves from their alliance with the Canterbury firms, and make separate arrangements, in which event it is believed the men would have been willing to accept a lower rate than that first asked for. This, however,, the employers refused. Up to the present no serious efforts have been made to obtain new hands, but the present state of things cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely, and employers, say that they will be forced to take active measures to secure other workmen. The Mataura works started on Saturday, and the old hands went back to work.
