BRITISH POLITICS.
THE NAVY ESTIMATES.
Received March 8, 11.31 p.m. LONDON, March 8
In the House of Commons, Mr J. Murray MacDorald sought to reduce the strength of the Navy by 8,000 men on the grounds that the two next strongest European Powers maintain a force not exceeding 94,000 men, and an alliance another Power ought to imply reduc-' tion.
Mr Balfour, in a vigorous speech, declared that an alliance was impossible without a maintenance of strength. Mr Mac Donald's amendment was withdrawn, and the Navy estimates covering the vote for men and money was agreed to.
