NEW POST OFFICE AT FEATHERSTON.
On Thursday Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, M.H.R., 'introduced to the At torney-General a deputation consisting of Messrs J. G. Cox, J. S. €undy, M. J. H. Jackson, Donald, Alex. Toogood and E. G. Robertson, ■who complained of the site selected by an officer of the Government for -the new Post Office to be erected at Featherston. The deputation asked that another officer should be sent to report on the most suitable site. It was stated that the site vchosen was a library reserve, and apart from this was too far away from the business centre. Several more suitable sites, it was claimed, "were available, Various minor objections were also urged against the library site. In reply, the Hon. Dr. Findlay said that in the short time since he had been Acting Postmaster-General three, complaints of a similar char- j acter had been received. This showed that the people were alive to the interests of their districts at all ■events. / So far as the qualifications of the officer who Selected the site was concerned he would say that the gentleman was the Inspector of Post Offices, a very capable man. The site had also been approved by the Town Board by a majority of one —4 to 3. This showed that opinon was divided, and he had no means of ascertaining which way the bal • ance lay. After some discussion Dr. Findlay said the "Justice site" —a section near the Courthouse, and opposite the Bank of Australasiamight be considered. He would submit the matter to the Department again, and do his best to meet the wishes of the greatest number.
