SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

CARLTON A v. STAR A.

Star A defeated Carlton A on the Park Oval yesterday afternoon by 8 wickets and 4 runs. With five wickets down for 118 runs, the Stars resumed their innings, Fish and F. Richards, the not out men, going to the wickets. The partnership was productive of some good cricket. Both batsmen hit freely, and the score was carried to 169 before Richards lost Fish, who was caught by O'Leary for 69. The retiring batsman's score included three 4's, six 3's, and twelve 2'a. 169-6—69. Moss joined Richards, but the latter was bowled by Darvill when only two more runs had been added. Richards played nicely for his 39, which included three 4's, four 3's and two 2's. 171—7—39. L. Richards joined Moss, and the pair took the score to 193. Richards was then given out lbw to O'Leary. 193—8—8. Kingdon was the next man in, but he was caught off the first ball by E. Welch 193—9—0. McLean joined Moss. At 196 McLean was bowled. Moss made 14 not out by free cricket. O'Leary was the most successful bowler for Carlton, taking four wickets for 22.

Hoar and Swan opened for Carlton to the bowling of Madsen and Moss, but the last-named batsman was caught by a substitute off the first ball of the innings. o—l—o. F. Welch was next in, and scored 7 runs before he was bowled by Moss. 7_2—7. O'Leary followed, and at 11 he was caught in the slips by Madsen off Moss. 11—3—1. The pair punished the bowling severely, and before they were separated the score stood at 65. Both men hit freely, and what was more they never lost an opportunity to "sneak" runs. They gave the field a lively time, and treated the spectators to some good cricket. At 65, Congdon, who had 22 to his credit, was bowled by Kingdon. 65_6—22. Darvill had 21 opposite his name when E. Welch joined him. The former did not last much longer, for the first ball he received from Fish he hit into Kingdon's hands. 65—7—21. A. Hoar joined Welch at the wickets, and the partnership put on eleven runs. At 76 Welch was caught by Mackellar. 76—8—5. Boyd was the last man in, but he was bowled by Kingdon before he had scored: The innings closed for 87. Moss was the most successful bowler, taking three wickets for 19 runs. Madsen, Fish and Kingdon took two wickets each.

Requiring 30 runs to win, with a Jittle over half an hour to make them ;in, the Star captain sent Moss and Mackellar to the wickets. Off v the second ball of the over Mackellar was caught by E. Welch off Hoar. o—l—o. Perry was the next man in, but he had only made 5 when he placed one into Hoar's hands. B—2—s.
