Bent), the Chief Secretary (Sir Alex. Peacock, representing the lately-absorbed third party), the Ministers for Works and Lands; also two Labour candidates. PROPOSED TOWNS-WEBB SCULLING MATCH. Received March 7, 10.55 p.m. SYDNEY, March 7. George Towns says that he does not quite understand whether Webb, of Wanganui, wants him to go to New Zealand, or whether Webb is coming over here. Towns is sending Webb a copy of the championship articles. RACING. Received March 7, 11.16 p.m. SYDNEY, March 7. Solution heads the list of Doncaster Handicap weights with 9st 91b. Cuneiform and Multifid have each Bst 111b, and Apologue 7st 21b. For the Sydney Cup, Dividend is top weight with 9st 51b; Solution has Bst 121b, Multifid Bst 91b, and Apologue 7st 81b. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. Received March 7, 11.16 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 6. A fire at Elsternwick destroyed the whole stock of cars (seventeen) of the St. Kilda and West Brighton Electric Tramway Company. As a result business on the line has been suspended till new cars are built. The cause of the fire is a mystery. The electric current was cut off at the time of the outbreak, the fire starting in the manager's office. The damage is roughly estimated at £15,000. PLAGUE. Received March 8, 1.12 a.m.* SYDNEY, March 7. Another case of plague is reported.
