THE SLAGHTERMEN'S STRIKE.
By Telegraph —Press Association
DUNEDIN, March 6.
The Otago Employers' Association, after considering the question of the slaughtermen's strike, agreed to .forward the Association's opinions thereon to the New Zealand Employers' Federation, so that the question might be dealt with as from one body. The opinion was generally expressed that unless the awards of the Arbitration Court can be made enforceable against workers it was of no value to employers. CHRISTCHURCH, March 6.
A conference was held, this afternoon, between the representatives of the two Meat Companies and the officials and executive of the Slaughtermen's Union. No decision, however, was arrived at as to the terms upon which the men would resume work, and the conference was adjourned till to-morrow. ' INVERCARGILL, March 6.
The impression is current that the end of the strike in Southland is in view. The Mataura works will recommence operations on Friday, the men having agreed to accept the terms originally offered by the company. Work would have begun sonner, but for the unavoidable delay in bringing stock forward. The Wallacetown works start again at the end of the week or the beginning of next week. Most of the men to be employed are new hands. WELLINGTON, March 6.
A full board of butchers, mostly old hands, agreed to start at Mataura to-morrow morning at the old rates, subject to a retrospective payment according to the new award. When the full board is obtained at Wallacetown operations will be resumed. The company will not discriminate between the old hands and new.
