TURF NOTES. (By Zetland). The Dannevirke Jockey Club's annual meeting will open i.o-day. The Wairarapa horses engaged at the fixture [are Lavinia, Mataari, Merrie Naphtha, Royal Blue, Aboriginal, Hatley, Arahura, Stepmar and Dulcinea. The meeting will be patronised by a fair number of sportsmen from this district. The following candidates are suggested as likely to run forward in their engagements : Hack Hurdles. —Gold Dust and Lavinia. t Trial Hack.—Routine and Prevail. Makirikiri Hack. Marseillaise and Naphtha. Dannevirke Cup. Mystification and Polyanthus. Tahoraiti Welter.—Te Rahui and Routine. Flying Stakes.—Scotch Reel and Declination. Electric Hack.—St. Maria and Stepmar. Tamaki Welter.—Tercelet and Chatterer. The Wanganui meeting will commence on Friday. Considerable interestfis being taken by the sporting public in the Wanganui Cup and Flying Handicap, and there has been plenty of double betting over these events. For the Cup Marguerite rules favourite. It, however, remains to be seen whether the Stepniak mare can. compass one mile and three quarters at a pace solid enough to win. Multifid has only to be landed at the post fit and well to run a really good race, and has only to be in his Canterbury Cup form to take a lot of beating. Paritutu, by winning at the Taranaki meeting, showed a return to form. Master Delaval, the last Auckland Cup winner, is highly thought of for the event, and, with other good ones engaged like King Billy, Apa, Truce, Montigo, Riflemaid and Seal Rock, the race should provide a . first-class contest. Achilles (lOst 81b) will probably start favourite for the Flying Handicap, but will have to do his best to shake off sprinters' like Isolt, Golden Gate, Delamere, and Splendid Jdea. Af ter'particulars come through relative to the final gallops, a better idea can be formed of the chances of several of the leading candidates.
WANGANUI TRAINING NOTES. By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, March 5. Multifid and King Billy arrived yesterday. The weather was beautiful this morning. Prosser's team was the first to work! Kuku was sent a couple of rounds at a slow pace with Devonia. Achilles ran six furlongs, with a flying, start, in Imin 18sec. Gold Crest ran four furlongs in 53sec. Seal Rock was sent a couple of circuits, picking Waione up in the last half-mile, and finishing fast. Marguerite, Fishermad, Aqua Regia, and Isolt each did good solid work. Multifid, who appears to have built up, and looks in splendid fettle, had Paritutu for a companion in a gallop. Both horses shaped well, though neither was extended. Paritutu had the lead at the entrance of the straight, but Multifid closed up, and the pair were on even terms at the finish, the circle taking lmin 41 3-ssec. Dear Dolly and Irish Rifle took about the same time over a similar distance, the former finishing in front. Pawa and Maui had a couple of rounds of schooling over the hurdles. Master Delaval and Silicia were given a couple of solid rounds. Lamsdorff, Gazeley, and White Lie did slow work. Downfall trotted. King Billy, who looks as well as ever, did two rounds at half.pace. Helen Portland badly beat Signor over five furlongs. The former is very well. Montigo and Riflemaid were associated over a mile and seven furlongs. The former galloped freer than usual, but Riflemaid was holding her own, apparently comforably, at the end. Flintgun has been scratched for all engagements.
