During January, 1907, the arrivals in New Zealand totalled 4,788. The departures aggregated 2,172. The colony's population was therefore increased by" 2,616 by immigration. In January last year the arrivals numbered 4,878, and the departures 1,726. , The longest service man in the New Zealand police force is Constable John Jeffries, stationed at the Port, Nelson. He joined the force in 1866, and on April Ist will have served forty-one years in the force. Constable Jeffries has applied for leave, and is now claiming his police pension. During the month of February the amount of gold exported from the colony was 39,6360z valued at £162,679, compared with 32,7080z, valued at £130,693 for February, 1906. For the two months of this; year the exported quantity was 67,1460z valued at £269,796, as against the export for the same period of 1906 of 94,4120z, valued at £380,521. The export of silver for the past month was 82,1390z, valued at £11,369, as against 168,7650z., valued at £16,991 for February, 1906. Cr Pauling mentioned at the meeting of the Mastsrton Borough Council last evening that now that the time for the election for Mayor of the town was approaching, the Council should interest themselves in the matter, and try and induce some capable citizen, who would fill the position with credit, to stand for the Mayoralty. Cr Elliott stated that the matter of choosing a Mayor rested entirely with the ratepayers. As ratepayers, the Council could move in the matter, but not as a Council. Cr Feist: "My opinion is that the Mayor should be elected by the Council." "Quite right," observed several Councillors. The matter then dropped.
