The nett overdraft of the Masterton Borough Council is £3,560 8s lid. The rates due amount to £3,428 7s 4d. The conference of delegates of agricultural societies of the colony is to be held in Wellington next July. There is every probability of a mining company being formed at Orepuki to work the beach, which will be done by hydraulic sluicing. The Acting - Premier suggests Easter Monday as the date for the official opening of the Otago Central Railway to Clyde. A meeting of the managei-s of the Masterton Technical School will be held in the Tecbnial School building, at 8 p.m., on Friday next. 'Entries for the Canterbury A. and P. Ram Fair on Thursday and Friday exceed last year's entries by about 1,200, and constitute a record for the colony. A New Plymouth firm finds it cheapest to import its millinery by post, and the other day the local post office was besieged with 98 boxes of millinery.

3 A meeting of employers of domestic servants was held in Wellington yesterday, and an association formed.

The Hon. W. Hall-Jones received a cable message yesterday -stating that Sir Joseph Ward and party had arrived at Port Said on Monday, all well.

Acceptances for the St. Patrick's Day Sports, on March 14th, will close with the secretary (Mr C. A. Tabuteau) on Saturday evening next, at 9 o'clock.

At Carterton, yesterday, Miss Mabel McLean, fifth daughter of Mr A. McLean, of Riwaka, Nelson, was married to Mr James Carr, of Mangaweka.

During the month of February, 145 cattle, 17 calves, 930 sheep and lambs, and 104 pigs, were slaughtered at the Masterton Abattoir. The receipts for the month amounted to £lls 14s 9d.

Pauling, J.P., at the Masterton Police Court, yesterday morning, John Gorzleek, a third offender, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for having been drunk.* The accused had been convicted and discharge for a similar offence on the previous morning. , A first offender was fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. At the Government parade of the Masterton Rifle Volunteers on Friday evening next a start will made with what is known as the "sand table" instruction. By means of sand placed on a table the men are shown a model of the contour of a certain tract of country, and are instructed in general tactics, including outpost duty, attack and defence company work and field]movements.

A conference was held on Monday between the members of the Wairarapa District Hospital Board and the Masterton Hospital Trustees with reference to selecting the site for the new infectious diseases hospital. The members visited the site where the new Masterton hospital is now being erected, and decided to erect the infectious diseases ward in the south-east corner of the section, about three chains from the main building. A letter was received at the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening from the Secretary of the Chamber of 1 Commerce directing the Council's attention "to the careless manner in which street and house refuse was carted through the streets of the Borough, thereby endangering the health of the citizens." Cr McEwen stated that he had heard similar complaints from the residents of Bannister and Johnston Streets. The refuse cart was left standing in the streets, and when the wind sprang up it blew portions of the refuse about the roads. The Town Clerk suggested that the Council should make a by-law compelling all persons who cart refuse to use covered-in carts. Eventually the letter was referred to the By-laws Committee for consideration.

Cr E. Feist, Deputy-Mayor, intimated at tlw meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening that it was his intention to take a trip to England and Scotland, and he had made arrangements to leave the colony by the Karamea on March 28th. He thanked the Council for having elected him to the position of Deputy-Mayor. He had been in New Zealand since 1865, and had always had a desire to see the Old Country again. Referring to the forthcoming elections he hoped a capable man would be elected as Mayor. He had been asked if he intended to contest the Mayoralty, but he would state that he had no intention of standing for the position. He hoped all the present Councillors would be re-elected. He would ask the Council to grant him leave of absence for the remainder of the term. Crs McEwen, Elliott, Morris and Eton, referred to the valuable services that had been rendered by Cr Feist, and wished him a pleasant trip Home, and a safe return. On the motion of Cr Pauling,seconded by Cr Ewington, it was decided to grant Cr Feist leave of absence for the remainder of his term of office. MERIT REWARDED BY COURT OP JUSTICE. At the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, it was decided to.call tenders for the work of extending the water mains along South Road. The Masterton Bowling Club will send three rinks to* Pahiatua on Saturday to play three rinks from the Pahiatua Club. A motion has been filed in the Wellington Supreme Court, on behalf of the Law Society, to strike the name of H. S. Izard off the roll of solicitors. Izard is serving five years in gaol for misappropriation of trust funds. On the motion of Cr McEwen, seconded by Cr Pauling, it was decided at the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening to take a poll of the ratepayers, on the advisability of introducing the Fire Brigades Act into the Borough, at same time as the election for Mayor and Councillors takes place. Besides sending four rinks to Masterton on Thursday to compete for the Booth. Cup, the Carterton Bowling Club will send two additional 1 rinks to play two rinks from the Masterton Club. The following are the additional rinks to represent the Masterton Club: Taylor, Long; Thompson, Rose (skip); Tpwnsend, King, Wright, Prentice (skip). At the meeting of the Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade last evening long service honours were presented to Secretary Pragnell (two extra service bars, completing 19 years' service), Captain Jenkins (two years' service bar, completing 11 years' service), Fireman J. H. Berry (two years' service bar, completing nine years' service), and a long service medal to Fireman E. Warner (completing five years' service).

A keen demand for sections in the Wrigley Estate is reported. It is generally recognised that the subdivision of this estate will benefit Masterton to a considerable extent, and that it is about the last opportunity that will occur of securing residential sections in a really convenient position for business people. After the plans for sub-division were passed last night by the Borough Council four sections were immediately disposed of. Sections are obtainable from local land agents.

Mr J. Fraser, acting for the Masterton Borough Council, and Mr W. H. Cruickshank, acting for Mrs H. Beale, were unable to agree in fixing the amount of compensation to be paid for a section of Mrs Beale's land for the widening of Pine Street, and Mr A. J. Hathaway was called in as umpire. Mr Hathaway reported to the meeting of the Borough Council, last evening, that he had fixed the amount of compensation to be paid to Mrs Beale at £37 10s; also that the Council pay £3 to have the fences set back and re-erected, and that the Council construct the necessary footpath where the street has been widened. The Council passed the amounts\ involved for payment.

The annual meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Chess Club will be held at ' the Association's rooms at 7.30 o'clock to-night. Simple and easy payments is a factor of the Wellington Piano Company's business. Particulars of the system and instruments can be seen at Messrs McLeod and Young's, "The Academy," Masterton. The W.F.C.A. have to hand direct from the potteries new patterns in tea and dinner-ware. These are now on view in the firm's fancy department.

Mr C. Y. Dally, manager of the Austral Botanic Manufacturing Company, Queen Street, Masterton, notifies that Mr Tobias Miller has no connection with his company. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Wellington, have a vacancy for a first-class auctioneer and stock salesman for one of their country districts. Applicants are required to have a thorough knowledge of the business.

On page 7 of this issue Messrs Samuel Vaile and Sons, land and estate agents, Auckland, advertise particulars of a sheep and cattle station of 1,775 acres, well improved, and a fruit and poultry farm. Both properties can be purchased on easy terms. i Messrs' Krahagen and Chapman, tailors, announce the arrival of a very large shipment of autumn goods, I which are now on view at their shop in Perry Street. The new lines are of the very latest style, and include a special line of Harris tweeds, worsted cheviots, Check Bannockburns, etc., and the^ 1 person would be hard indeed to please, who could not find something entirely suitable to his taste. The firm also make a specialty of riding breeches; and in this connection they have a most extensive assortment of [tweeds, included in which is the notable Bliss tweed. The public are invited to make an inspection of the new goods. The bakery and pastry-cook business recently conducted by Messrs McGarry Bros., Eketahuna, will in future be carried on by Mr Robfc McGarry. The quality of the goods which made the late firm's reputation will be maintained by the new management. The large bake-house and oven that is situated in Parkville will be in charge of a capable and experienced man, and customers can rely upon securing fresh supplies daily. The refreshment-room that is modelled on up-to-date lines will be open for the convenience of the public, who will always find these rooms a comfortable retreat, where a delicious cup of tea and refreshments can be procured at a very reasonable cost.
