AFFAIRS IN SAN FRANCISCO.
(Per Mail Steamer Sierra.) | -—, , I SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 17. Excessive rains during the month of January have made California generally and San Francisco in particular rather disagreeable. The rainfall has been the most excessive since 1890, and several storms have been of unprecedented severity. In spite of this complication stgady progress toward re-building the city has been made, and people have been gay after their habit. Concerts and theatrical exhibitions of all kinds have been liberally patronised. Tihe hotel accommodation is improving constantly and the hostelries can now take care of some twelve thousand visitors at a time., It is expected that double that number will jbe accommodated within a few months. The magnificent Fairmount Hotel and some others of lesser importance are nearly ready for use. The new plans for the Palace Hotel are interesting, as the original idea for rebuilding has expanded considerably. The new hotel with the site will re- ' present an investment of five and ahalf million dollars. It will be owned by a syndicate of capitalists. It has now been decided that the new structure, which will shortly be begun, shall cover the entire site formerly occupied. The main building will be nine stories high, with an extension of two stories in height on Jessie Sreet. The side walls of the old Palace have been raised after labour of some months. The new Palace will contain bathrooms, a palm garden, and other features similar to those which made the former structure famous, but on a more magnificent scale.
