CRICKET NOTES.
(By Cover Ppint). The Star A-Carlton A match was commenced on the Park Oval on Thursday afternoon. Carlton batted first, Swan and O'Leary being the opening batsmen.. Both players batted nicely, and 38 was up before Kingdon bowled Swan, who had made 13 by pretty cricket. 1 Congdon joined O'Leary, and the pair carried the score to 57, when the latter was neatly caught by Kingdon off Fish. O'Leary made 33 by hard hitting. Bewley filled the vacancy, but at 59 lost Congdon, who was given on t leg before wicket. Prow, who joined Bewley, soon got going, and' the; pair carried the score to 72, when Kingdon, off his own bowling, caught Bewley. F. Welch and Prow * were not long associated, the latter retiring when the score had reach 75. Prow made 11 by good cricket. T. Hoar joined F. Welch, and some lively cricket was seen, the former hittirg out merrily. The score board showed 111 before Hoar retired with 20 to his credit, compiled by hard hitting. Darvill's innings . was- a short but merry one, and he assisted to carry the score to 124 before Mackellar caught him off Maisen. F. Welch was caught by Madsen off his own bowling with the score unaltered. N. Boyd retired,] bowled by Madsen, after one run had been added to the score. E. Welch and A. Hoar were the last pair, and they carried the score to 138 before Welch was caught by Kingdon off Madsen's bowling. The retiring batsman had made 8 by careful cricket. Madsen bowled well for the Stars, and came out with the fine average of 5 for 18.. Kingdon also ; bowled well, taking 4 wickets for 32. The Star fielding was very poor. The Stars were first represented by Mackellar and Esson, and the pair gave a good display, putting on 26 before Mackellar was bowled by E. Welch for 13, made by nice cricket. Perry joined Esson, but at 32 Darvill cleverly caught Perry behind the wickets. Fish and Esson were not loqg associated for at 35 Esson was stumped by Darvill off E. Welch's bowling. Esson had made 18 by good cricket. Madsen's appearance at the wickets was the signal for the field to spread out. The newcomer started with a four, and continued to bang the bowling all over the field till he put a ball into the safe hands of Prow. Madsen had inade 23. His score included three 4's. The score was 72. Dwyer came and went without scoring, and the board showed 73 as F. . Richards joined Fish. Both batsmen started " streakily," but soon settled down, and treated the bowling with littie respect. £Sy 2's, 83's and 4's the score mounted up.
The pair played out time, the score being 118 for 5 wickets. Fish has 37 ' to his credit, and Richards 21. The Carlton fielding was patchy at times.
