MASTERTON RAM FAIR
Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on the second day of the Ram Fair, yesterday, as follows :—The fair was opened by offerings of flocks in Leicesters, Shropshires and Lincolns. In Leicesters we had a small catalogue, and quitted the whole of our entry at somewhat low prices. Shropshires were very hard to sell, the bulk of our business haying to be done privately. For all good in Lincolns we experienced animated competition. Mr W. Perry, "Penrose," in this class easily topped the Fair at pricas which ranged as high as 20gns. Mr E. J. Riddiford|/had a heavy catalogue, which also met with spirited bidding, all sheep offered on behalf of this client being sold. Late shorn and inferior bred rams in this class were hard to quit. Buyers were, howj ever, present, and we succeeded in i quitting almost the whole of our catalogue at prices which must be considered eminently satisfactory. In | stud sheep we submitted a heavy list lof Leicesters and Lincolns. In Leicesters Mr S. R. Lancaster topped the Fair at £L2gns, Mr W Perry doing likewise in Lincolns, with a ram which was purchased by Mr Lethbridge, of Feilding, at 50gns. We quote: — On' account of W. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report on their sale at the Masterton Ram Fair, yesterday:—Rams submitted were Lincolns, English Leicesters and Shropshires. We experienced a keen demand throughout for Lincolns, of which we had a large entry, and practically all good lines were disposed of under the hammer. Selling was continued until dark, I and although second-class Lincolns were more difficult to quit, very few were unsold until towards, the close of the day. As all noted breeders' sheep were keenly competed for, it is difficult to individualise, but Mr W. H. Wybourne topped our list in stud I Lincolns at 41gns, and Mr W. Perry in flocks at 12j£gns. The other breeds were not in great demand, and several lines failed to change hands. i Stud Shropshires, on account Mr B. Seth-Smith, sold at 16Jgns; on account Mrs B. H. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., refollows: —We had a heavy catalogue embracing eveiy class. For all Lincolns offered we had spirited bidding with the exception of some out of condition, and late-shorn sorts. These classes had to be dealt with privately afterwards. Shropshires were disappointing in price, although we cleared every black-face. Very little interest was displayed in the English Leicester class, yet we got off to advantage all Southern lots entrusted to our. care, including those of Mr Sowden and the Lonecliff Estate. We had only one pen of Lincoln - Leicesters, and these we disposed of. In stud Lincolns, Mr W. H. Wybourne led with an average of lljgns, Mr J. Macara coining next with Bgns. In flocks Mr W.
