NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, February 21. The New Zealand Aniateur Athletic Association's 18th championship meeting was commenced at the Exhibition Sports Ground this afternoon . The weather was fine, and although the attendance of spectators was small at the outset there were over 1,000 present later on in the afternoon. The. results are as follow :

The Chamber of Commerce has expressed disapproval of the proposed abandonment of the Vancouver mail service by Queensland. (Premier Kidston has stated that he does not object to a New Zealand port of call being substituted for Brisbane). FREE SUNDAY TRADING. Received February 21, 9.40 a.m* MELBOURNE, February 21. An extraordinary position has arisen in connection witii the Licensing Act. Mr Justice Hood, reviewing a case, decided that the hours prescribed under the Act during which the sale of liquor is prohibited do not include day time on Sunday. THE COOKTOWN EXPLOSION. Received February 21, 9.40 a.m. BRISBANE, February 21. The third native who was injured by the explosion of benzine on the schooner Papuan, in Cooktown Harbour, is dead. AUSTRALIAN MAIL CONTRACT. Received February 21, 9.52 a.m. MELBOURNE, February"2l. Mr Trevis Clark, agent for the mail syndicate, arrived unexpectedly. He brings plans and specifications of the vessels. Mr Clark is a director of James Laing and Sons. The nature of his mission is not disclosed. c
THE DIFFICULTY CONFIRMED. Received February 21, 9.52 a.m. ADELAIDE, February 21. A well-known Adelaide merchant states that he is in possession of information direct irom the office of one of the largest steamship companies trading with Australia, confirming yesterday's cablegram announcing that a hitch has occurred in connection with the mail contract. When the contract was signed, Messrs Laing undertook to form a big company. So far they have been unsuccessful, though everybody likely to invest has been consulted. The merchant is also informed that the keels of the new vessels, which were reported some months ago to have been laid down, have apparently been put to other purposes. Received Last Night, 10.2 p.m. MELBOURNE, February 21. In reply to questions the Postmaster informed the House that he received a cable from the agent in London stating that Mr Beardmore had withdrawn from the directorate of the mail syndicate, but his firm remained in it. The Postmaster saw Mr Clark, agent of the syndicate, who stated that his mission to Australia was not to try to alter the condition of the. contract. He was looking into the question of shipbuilding generally, and would afford the Government some interesting information on the mail contract. NORTHERN TERRITORY AGREEMENT.' ■ Received February 21, 9.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, February 21. The agreement respecting the Northern Territory has been tabled. The Commonwealth undertakes to maintain and work the railways, when they are acquired and constructed, and will construct a part of the Trans-continental railway. The Commonwealth will also take over the indebtedness of the Territory. The agreement is not binding until it is approved by the Commonwealth and the South Australian Parliaments. . THE PLAGUE. Received Last Night, 9.5S o'clock. SYDNEY, February 21. A plague patient has succumbed. NAUTICAL INQUIRY. Received l Last Night, 10.2 o'clock. SYDNEY, February 21. The Marine Court inquired into, the wrecks of the Maelgwyn and Annasona,and found that the abandonment of the Maelgwyn was justified. As regards the Annasona the Court found that the loss of the vessel was due to careless navigation. Her master (Captain Blackstock) was cited to show cause why his certificate should not be dealt with.
