The cricket match between the M.C.C. team and the Wairarapa team will commence at 2 o'clock, this afternoon, on the Park Oval. Mr John Gunther has disposed of his farm, "Korikohi," at Fernridge, to Mr W. J. Montgomery, of Masterton. The Otago Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union intends promoting a campaign in opposition to the Land Bill. Miss Bagley, who was at one time matron of the'Masterton Hospital, has been appointed matron of the Chalet Hospital, Dunedin. Patrick Francis Brosnahan, charged at the Wellington Supreme Court, yesterday, with having attempted to extort money from Edgar Hyde, was acquitted. Claude Paget was before the Wellington Stipendiary Magistrate, yesterday, charged with the murder of Pearl Axup on February 12th. Evidence was called on the lines of that taken at the inquest, last week, and Paget was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Mr W." P. James, S.M., at the Masterton Magistrate's Court, yesterday morning dealt with four persons charged with drunkenness. John Lavin, a second offender, was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. The colonial mails which left Auckland per R.M.S. Sierra, on January 12th, via San in London on the 14th inst. A cablegram received from London last evening stated that England defeated Ireland at football by 5 points to nil. An Invercargill telegram states that Willie Rutland, the Lome Farm boy, for whose safety fears were entertained, was found hiding on the top of a cupboard to avoid a ducking by the other boys. The 41st week of the Lincoln College Egg - laying Competition, ended on February 15th. To-date the total for the 100 pens is 49,362, and for the week 995. The leading totals' are:—M. Blanch (Silver Wyandottes), 948; J. Ashton {(Silver Wyandottes), 805; J. Jackman (Silver Wyandottes), 774. There was an unprecedentedly heavy rainfall in the South Wairarapa on Saturday night and Sunday* evening. Shortly after 5 o'cock on Sunday a thunderstorm passed over the district, travelling from the north-west to south-east, accompanied by heavy rain, which wilLbe of great benefit to the*parched country.

The Northern Company's steamer Paeroa, which arrived at Auckland from the. North on Sunday, picked up a fishing-boat, numbered "Auckland 28," off Wangamumu, on Friday. The boat is in good order, but the crew, two Greeks, named John Palmers and John Ammox, are missing. They are supposed to have attempted to make land in their dinghy durirg a gale, and been drowned.

The Masterton South' Band will hold a bazaar in the Kuripuni Hall tonight and to-morrow. Special efforts have been made by the committee to provide an attractive musical programme. A phonographic entertainment will be given each evening, and items will be rendered by local vocalists. An energetic committee of ladies and bandsmen have all the arrangements well in hand, is anticipated that the funds of the Band will be considerably augmented by the bazaar. The doors will be opened this evening at 7.45 o'clock, and bandsmen are requested to be in attendance at 7.30 o'clock.

At the Wellington Police Court, yesterday, Thomas Wallace, alias Williams, and John Baxter were charged with conspiring with two other men to defraud James Chapman. The story told for the prosecution unfolded a variation of the "Confidence Trick." Chapman, who arrived a week or two ago from England, was possessed of £SO. He met the two defendants and others at a hotel, where there were the usual discussions about rich Ceylon tea planters, big legacies, and honest men. Certain games were suggested and played. Money was produced and cheques signed in a more or less reckless way, the upshot being that in the end Chapman was without his money and had also lost £4O of his brother's funds. Tne hearing of the case had not concluded when Court rose for the day.

The Masterton Borough Council will hold a special meeting, on Tuesday, 12th March, at which certain resolutions dealing with a revision of the building by-laws will be brought up for confirmation.

On Thursday, March 12th, Messrs Dalgety 'and Cf«., Ltd., and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., will conduct the annual stock sale on behalf of the settlers in the Upper Opaki district.

Visitors to Masterton during Show week are invited to visit Professor Williams' establishment in Queen Street, where the best brands of cigars and cigarettes are obtainable. The hairdressing and shaving saloon is up-to-date in every particular.

Mr August Johnson, of Myrtle Holme, advertises for sale 500 acres of good sheep country. This farm, is well improved, is situated 9£ miles from the Masterton Post Office and is only one mile from a school and post office.

Elsewhere in this issue Mr T. G. Mason notifies that he has a complete stock of all photographic requisites, and his staff are able and ready to assist beginners. The pharmacy department is replete with all medical preparations.

The wrapper of this preparation entitles the purchaser to a chance in the free trip to the Christchurch Exhibition. At the Showgroundsjto-morrow afternoon, Mr J. R. Nicol will sell, on account of the New Zealand Furniture Company, the whole of their show exhibits. . These consist of bedroom suites, sideboards, and din-ing-room suites, which will be on view to-day and up to the time of sale to-morrow. At their Wellington warehouse, to-day, the Scoullar Company, Limited, will commence a sale of goods that have been damaged by flood water. The firm state that, on account of the heavy rain on Friday last, a large quantity of goods in their Manchester and furnishing departments were to some extent damaged, and these they are determined to clear ont at bargain prices.

The largest cheque that the Masterton Co-operative Dairy Company paid to any one supplier during the month of January was £B9 17s 3d. This is the largest cheque that has ever been paid to one supplier by the company.

Mr W. Newton, who has been Inspector for the Department of Labour in Masterton during the past two years, and who has; been transferred to Christchurch, will leave for that place at the end of next week. Mr Newton was stationed at Christchurch prior to coming to Masterton.

The following are the tests of the various creameries supplying the Masterton Dairy Factory during the month of January: Rangitumau, highest 4.2, lowest 3.5, average 3.86;: Nikau, highest 4.1, lowest 3.3, average 3.76; Mangamaire, highest 4, lowest 3, average 3.69.

A girl, named Ivy Warner, aged 19, was brought to the Christchurch, Hospital, about 3 o'clock yesterday morning, suffering from a wound in the throat, alleged to have been 'self-inflicted. The girl had been staying with relatives at Aylesbury, and was found evening with her throat badly cut and a butcher's knife close by. No reason is assigned for the act. The girl is at present in a serious^condition.

A meeting of those interested in re-organising the , Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association was held last evening. Mr G. Hyde occupied the chair, and there wa3 a large attendance. After an enthusiastic meeting those present were appointed a committee with power to add. Another meeting will be held on Monday evening next to make further arrangements in connection with the Association.

The month?y meeting of the Workers' Mutual Benefit Buildingheld last night. There were present Messrs Prentice (chairman), Chamberlain, Cresswell,. Gardner, Gordon, and Fowles. An apology for absence was received from Mr Krahagen. The Treasurer reported a credit balance in the bank of £592 8s Id. It was resolved that an appropriation of £3OO (free of interest), by sale, be called 7th.
