WELLINGTON v. M.C.C. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 15. ' The return match between Wellirgton and M.C.C. began, this after-

noon, in fine , weather. De Trafford won the toss, and went in. Play was very slow in the early stages of the game bordering on the tedious. Fox and Johnston opened the batting, and carried the total to 50 for an hour's play before a separation was effected. The second half-century j took half and hour, when Johnston, who was hitting out freely, was dismissed. After this the rate of scoring improved, and several changes of bowling were made without improving matters. Three wickets were down for 144, and then the batting collapsed, the remaining batsmen only putting on another 57 runs. Upham and Laws stood the brunt of the attack, and the former came out with the splendid average of seven for 78. Laws was not so successful, but ably assisted in keeping down the runs. The fielding of the local team was very fair, notably McDermid behind the [wickets and Cobcroft in the outfield. The innings of the Englishmen occupied three hours. With ten minutes to play, Wellingon sent in Collins and Cobcroft, and they played out time, the total being 15. The following are the scores: — M.C.C. —First Innings. Considerable interest is being taken in the match, and there is every indication of a record attendance.
