CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. There were present —Messrs J. D. Cruickshank (chairman), B. J. Dolan, D. Donald, G. C. Summerell, E. H. Waddington, T. G. Mason. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs F. W. Carey, E. E. Chamberlain; W. B. Chennells, C. E. Daniell, J. C. Ewington, J. B. Keith, R. T. Holmes, H. C. Robinson, J. B. Moodie and.M. Caselberg. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £7 3s sd. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce wrote notifying that the proposed conference of Chambers of Commerce had been abandoned owing to there not being sufficient questions of general interest for the proposed conference. Mr W. H. S. Nicholls, late Postmaster at Masterton, wrote acknowledging the Chamber's congratulations on his promotion to Thames. On the motion of Mr Mason, seconded by Mr Dolan.it was decided to call the attention of the Borough Council to the careless carriage of street refuse to the depot, and the danger to the public health caused thereby. • Mr Summerrell moved "that the Minister of Railways be petitioned, through Mr Hogg, drawing attention to the dangerous nature of the Akura crossing and requesting that a system of automatic signalling be installed or that a signalman Be placed at the crossing to control the traffic on the approach of trains; also that the petition be sighed by carriers and others interested." Mr Donald seconded the motion, which was carried. The quarterly meeting, which was to have been held subsequently, lapsed for the want of a quorum.
