EXHIBITION OF PICTURES.
There is now on view, at the Exchange Buildings, a fine collection of paintings by the well-known artist, Mr E. W. Christmas. It is -over ten vears since Mr Christmas last visited New Zealand. In the interval he has spent most of his time in London, and on the Continent, and has exhibited at many of the leading exhibitions in the Old World, such as the Royal Institute of Painters, Scotland, w;here his work was "invited," also at Leeds, Liverpool, and at the Royal Instiute Galleries in London. Since his return to New Zealand, he has been commissioned by the New Zealand Government to paint many large and important works for the Christchurch Exhibition, •where upwards of twenty of his pictures- are on view. At the last New Zealand Academy of Arts Exhibition in Wellington his picture "The Harbour from Karori Hills," won the Duthie twenty-five guinea prize against all corners. Amongst the collection on view perhaps the finest works are "The Billabong, "Sunset on the River Murray, Australia," an evening scene in which the artist has caught the true Australian .effect of a summer evening, ,a picture full of light and atmosphere. Some fine work and truthful New Zealand colouring is shown in pictures of the Franzjosef glaciers and mountains, where Mr Christmas was sent to paint for the Government. Some seascapes worthy of note are those depicting the coast of Manly, New South Wales, and a New Zealand scene, "Egmont from the Sea;" also some water-colours of the wonderful Wanganui River scenery. The whole collection is very creditable, and is worthy of inspection by all lovers of art and the beautiful. The exhibition will be open to the public to-day and Saturday.
