THE BRUNNER RELIEF FUND.

Interest in the Brunner Relief Fund is revived by the report of Mr W. S. Short, who'was commissioned by the Governor-in-Council to make enquiries in respect of a dispute which between the Brunner Disaster Advisory Board and the Public Trustee. The following is- a summary of Mr Short's finding:—-(1) The Public Trustee has properly and judiciously administered the Brunner Disaster Funds. (2) In the differences which have arisen v between the Public Trustee and the members of the Brunner Disaster Fund Advisory Board the Public Trusteee has acted in accordance with his powers in . the deed of trust, and that the exercise of his discretion thereunder is under the circumstances a reasonable one. I am, however, of opinion that he should re-consider his decision in Mrs Parson's case, as although his decision from a legal point of 'view is perfectly sound, still it would appear from an equitable point of view that some slight additional assistance should be rendered. (3) The said advisory board has no cause of complaint against or dissatisfaction with the Public Trustee in connection with any other matter or thing arising out of the administration of the fund, beyond !the question of the payment to Mrs Parsons. It is stated that Mrs Parsons, whose son was killed in the explosion, accepted £SO as a full acquittance of all demands. Her husband ( was then in fair health, but latterly he has be-, come enfeebled, and consequently the board considers that Mrs Parsons is entitled to assistance from the fund.
