SCHOOL GARDEN PLOTS.

RESULTS OF THE RECENT COMPETITIONS. The judges (Messrs J. McGregor and F. C. Lewis) submitted to the meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association, on Saturday, their report on the competitions in school garden plots which were recently held among the sphools in the Wairarapa. The schools that entered were: —Matahiwi (five plots), Hukanui (five plots), Ihuraua (ten plots), Dreyerton (four plots), Kaipororo (one plot) / Mauriceville West (seven plots), Taueru (four plots) and Hamua (six plots). Marks were awarded |pr general appearance of plots, straightness of rows, freedom from weeds, condition, of soil, quality and quantity of vegetables: Adverse circumstances —that is, poorness of soil, absence of water, and apposed situation—were also taken into consideration by the judges in alloting the marks. The prizes were: —First, 15s; second, 10s. Both prizes were secured by the Matahiwi School, j>lot No. 2 of that \ school being first, and plot No. 4 second. In plot No. 2, 37 points were awarded for neatness and cultivation, 24 for quality of vegetables, 25 for condition of tools, and nil for adverse circumstances. In the second-prize plot, 35 points were given for neatness , and cultivation, 23 for quality of vegetables, 25 for condition of tools, and nil for adverse circumstances.

A vote of thanks was accorded to the judges of the competition. Mr McGregor, in replying, said that the plots at the Hukanui and Ihuraua Schools were deserving of some recognition. Considering the adverse circumstances under which the pupils at those schools worked, they had made a very creditable display, and the speaker thought the Society should recognise it. The Committee decided to award certificates to the Matahiwi,Hukanui, and Ihuraua schools. In order to make special donations to the Ihuraua and Hukanui children, in recognition of their good work, each member ! in the room subscribed one shilling, with .the result that 22s was collected. It was decided to donate lis to each of the schools mentioned in the proportion of 7s to the first plot and 4s to the second plot. The plots at the Masterton District High School, which were not eligible for the above competitions, will be judged on Saturday next.
