VALEDICTORY.

;_ PRESENTATION TO MR W. H. S. NICHOLLS. At the conclusion of business at 5 p.m. yesterday, the combined staffs of the local Post and Telegraph Office and Telephone Exchange assembled in the Postmaster's room for the purpose of saying good-bye to Mr Nicholls and making him a presentation on the eve of his departure for Thames. Mr H. Cork, senior' clerk, on behalf of the staff, expressed regret at Mr Nicholls' departure from their midst, but as the transfer carried substantial promotion, the severance of their official tie could not be denied. In asking Mr Nicholls' acceptance of a gold watch, he trusted he would enjoy long life and health to wear it, and that on looking at the time it would serve to remind him of his old associations in Masterton. Three cheers were then given for Mr Nicholls. Mr Nicholls, in a neat speech, heartily thanked the donors forjtheir gift, stating that no such reminder would be necessary to recall the seven years pleasant sojourn in Masterton. Mr Nicholls t will leave for Thames by to-day's North express. He and his family will carry, with them the best wishes of numerous Masterton friends for their future prosperity.
