OPAKI QUOITS CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. (Special Reporter.) The third annual meeting of the Opaki Quoits Club was held in Mr Wyeth's woolshed last evening. Mr T. Wyeth (president) occupied the chair and there were over tweny other members present. The secretary, Mr S. Tankersley, read the following report of the year's work: — "In presenting the report and balance sheet for the past year we are pleased to state that our club has had a very successful year, and, although the members' roll and the attendance at competitions show a falling off as compared with last year, we still have the best and most enthusiastic players amongst us, and our club may congratulate itself upon still holding a very strong position as is evidenced by the success which has attended us at both public and interclub matches. The number of financial members is fifty-one and honorary members two, and the balance-sheet discloses a credit balance of £4 4s 9d. At the monthly competitions an average of seventeen players have competed, and the standard of play has been well maintained. Our worthy President kindly donated a gold medal for the most points in wins at these competitions, a first to count 5, a second 31, and a third 2 points. Mr Searle is the winner of this medal with 14 points, Mr J. Clune second with 12J points, and Mr H. Christensen third with 12 points. The W.F.C.A. kindly donated a gold medal for the highest aggregate of points scored at monthly competitions. Mr Searle is also the winner of this, with 565 points to his credit, Mr Ji Campbell second with 478, and Mr H. Christensen third with 473. The Challenge •Chain, or Cup rather, has not been such a success as last year. It has been competed for 130 times. Mr E. Petersen is the winner of this with 51 wins, Mr J. Clune second with 37, and Mr H. Christensen third with 7. A team from our club has played three matches for the Wairarapa Quoits Association Challenge Shield, one against Carlton and two against Mangatainoka, and We are pleased Jto state that we won all three, and are still holders of the Shield. Our' seniors also played a match against Palrperston North and our juniors against Langdale on the same day, and both teams were successful. Our players have also competed in public matches seven times, carrying off six first prizes, which we consider a fairly good record. During the year a North Island Quoits Association has been formed, with headquarters at Palmerston North. Last week a meeting of the Association was held, at which our delegates, Messrs Wyeth and Searle, were present, and they will be pleased to give an account of the business transacted. We regret that we have lost several enthusiastic players during the year —our late lamented comrade and vice-president, Mr G. H. Welch, and also the Campbell Bros, through their departure from the district, and now Mr Clune has taken his departure to start business on his own account. I am sure you all must fell that losing these' players is a distinct loss to the club." The balance-sheet showed the receipts to total £ls 9s, and the expenditure £ll 4s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £4 4s 9d. The report and balance-sheet, as read, were adopted. Mr Wyeth (president) said the report and balance-sheet must be very satisfactory to all present. It grieved the speaker to have to mention the loss sustained in the death of their late lamented vice-president, Mr G. H. Welch, who, as they all knew, was one of the most active members of the club. Mr Wyeth reported in connection with the meeting held at Palmerston North to form a North Island Association, and enumerated several of the rules that had been adopted at that meeting. At the meeting it was arranged to play a tournament, in June next, at the time of the Palmerston North Winter Show, the tournament to be open to all teams belonging to the Association. He felt sure that if the Opaki Club stuck to their monthly competitions they would have no reason to fear any other club. The club should be proud of having beaten a team from the biggest inland town in the colony (Palmferston North), and also a team from Langdale, both on the same day. He 1 thanked the Press for the support that had been accorded to the club.- The secretary, Mr S. Tankersley, was , undoubtedly the right man in the right place. The donors of trophies, i Mr Wyeth stated, were deserving of special praise for their generosity. He considered that the ladies were deserving of the heartiest thanks of the members, as they were the backbone of the club. A hearty vote of thanks to the ladies was carried unanimously. Votes of thanks were passed to the donors of trophies, to Mr S. Tankersley, hon. secretary, to Mr Nicholson, captain, to the outgoing officers and committee, to Messrs Wyeth and Tankersley, delegates. , and to the Press. Three hearty cheers were also given for the retiring president, Mr Thos. Wyeth, senior. The trophies won during the year were then presented to the successful competitors. The election of officers resulted as. follows:—Patron, Mr A. McLeod; President, Mr Thos. Wyeth, senr.; Vice-Presidents, Messrs Searle and McKenzie; Committee, Messrs R. s Hunt, R. Tankersley, E. Petersen, H.' Duckett, H. Christensen, and A. Chamberlain; Selection Committee, Messrs T. Wyeth, senr., S. Tankers- ' ley, J. Nicholson and D. McKenzie; Captain, Mr J. Nicholson; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, Mr S. Tankersley. The following new members were elected Messrs W. Stevenson, Alex. Wyeth and Burining Bros. (2). It was decided, by eleven votes to nine, to play a straight-out match for the championship of the club, the winner to receive Messrs Waish and Mowlem's trophy. It was resolved to hold a Challenge Chain Competition on the same conditions as last year.
