ENGLISH CRICKET TEAM'S VISIT.

QUESTION OF CHARGING LADIES FOR ADMISSION. Mr T. E. Maunsell, Secretary of j the Wairarapa Cricket Association, wrote to the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, asking that the Association be allowed to charge sixpence each for ladies for admission to the Park on the occasion of the cricket match between the Wairarapa and Marylebone Cricket Club teams. Mr Maunsell pointed out that the expenses in connection with the English team's visit were very heavy. As the Park Committee had given the ground free for the match, Cr Morris moved and Cr Temple seconded that Mr Maunsell's request be declined.. Cr Eton said that the Council was not financing the English teamVvisit to the Wairarapa, and he thought the Association should be assisted in some way. Cr Hoar spoke strongly in favour of acceding to the request contained in the letter. He said the Association had to find a substantial guarantee in connection with the visit, and they had also to accommodate the visitors at Carterton, • and bear the expense of carrying them* to and from Carterton. Cr Pauling said he was in favour of the ladies being charged an admission fee of sixpence. On beinginformed that the ground had been given free for the match, he thought that was a liberal enough concession in itself, and consequently he favoured allowing the ladies in free. After some further discussion, Cr Hoar moved as an amendment that the request be granted. The amendment was lost by five votes to four, the voting being:— Ayes: Crs Pauling, Hoar, Eton and Feist. Noes: Crs Temple, Elliott, Morris, Ewington and McEwen. ! The motion was then declared carried. Cr Eton handed in a notice of 1 motion for the next meeting that ladies be charged sixpence admission to the match. Cr Ewington pointed out that the notice of motion was too late. If it were carried, there would notjbe sufficient time to allow of advertising, for the length of time required, the fact that a charge would be made for ladies. The matter was then allowed to drop.
