ANGLICAN SYNOD.
4» By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, January 30. At the General Synod's sitting, this afternoon, Mr J. M. Ritchie moved that, subject to the assent of the Diocesan Synod or the Standing Committee of the Diocesan Synod or the Standing Committee of the Auckland Diocese, the Trustees of St. John's College be authorised to apply for Parliamentary power to sell, lease or exchange all or portion of the lands held by them for the general purposes of the College. Mr Allen seconded the motion. The Rev. W. Beatty objected to such power being given in this way seeing that £50,000 or £60,000 of property was involved. The Bishop of Auckland pointed out that there were two questions to be considered, (1) the payment of a warden, and (2) the erection of permanent bulildings. They wanted at least £5,000 before they began to erect buildings at ! Taranaki and Dunedin. A layman j bad promised a donation of £IOO arid ! the working girls of Dunedin had I volunteered to raise £sO,ffo r the PatI terson wing, and of
Hawke's Bay had written to say that he was prepared to find £I,OOO when £4OO had been raised. The Bishop said this offer was a challenge to the churchmen of New Zealand to provide for the better working of Bishop Selwyn's great national gift to New Zeaalnd. Several members thought it would be a dangerous precedent to give powers to sell property as asked for. Archdeacon Williams thanked Mr Ritchie for his interest in the matter, but feared that the proposal would have horrified Bishop Selwyn. The motion was withdrawn.
