CHEAP FARES TO THE EXHIBITION.
By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 29. The Hon. W. Hail-Jones, Minister for Railways, interviewed regarding the statement that he made some time ago that hejntendedjx* institute a system of special excursions from the various centres ; to the International Exhibition, stated that the arrangements in connection with the matter were now complete. In Regard to excursions from the North Island it had been necessary to negotiate with the Union Company in order to obtain bedrock fares from them and so as to make workable arrangements as between the Company and the Railway Department to enable the traffic to be expeditiously handed. The Union Company had met him fairly in the matter, and arrangements had. been made for special excursion fares between Wellington and Lytteltori for £1 for first-class return and 12s 6d for second-class return, which means return passages for ordinary, single rates. The railway fares had been reduced tp about one-third of a penny per mile, and the first-class fare to slightly oyer one-halfpenny per mile for the actual distance over which the passenger is i carried. Thus the railway fares from Napier to Wellington would be 16s 3d firstclass return and 12s second-class return, from Pahiatua to Wellington 9s 6d and i>s 9d, respectively, Dunedin t'o Chrfstchurch 18a.and 12s 9d, respectively, Timaru to Christchurch 8s 6d and 6s, respectively,: and so on.
