A man employed [at the wool-scour-ing works at Ashburton is at present under treatment for anthrax. No fewer than 500 cases are on the list before the Native Land Court now sitting in Wellington. The Ventura left San Francisco on the 19th inst. for New Zealand with an English mail. i The honorary treasurer of the Christchurch Sanatorium for Consumptives has received a cheque for £IOO from a subscriber. < The attendance at the Exhibition, for the week ending last night totalled 79,627, making the total to date 993,800. The mail steamer Sonoma is being overhauled in dry dock at Sydney, and will not leave Auckland for San Franciboo till 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 2nd. Mr H. P. Abraham, who was recently operated upon at Miss Freeman's private hospital, Palmerston North, for an attack of appendicitis, is improving rapidly, and it is expected will be convalescent shortly. At a conference of the delegates of the New Zealand Athletic Union, held at Christchurch yesterday, a reciprocity agreement was with the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. At the inquest at Napier "yesterday on the body of Mrs Mary Simmonds, who died as a result of the administration of chloroform, a verdict of death from syncope was returned, with no blame attachable to anyone. David Barrie, a boardinghousekeeper, in Wellington, was. fined £3 and costs, yesterday, on a charge of sly grog selling and £2 and costs (£3 10s) for having drawn beer from a cask without first defacing the stamp. There is every probability of an egglaying competition being held at Palmerston North in the near future. Mr Pickering (president of Island Poultry Association) has offered three acres of land free of charge for the purposes of the comj petition. The funeral of the late Miss Victoria Howell took place at the Masterton cemetery, yesterday morning, and was largely attended. Messrs W. Strang, R. E. Howell, W. Pragnell and T. Howell were the pallbearers. The Rev. A. M. Johnson conducted the services at the graveside. The Masterton Town Hall has been, booked as follows:—-February 3rd, Masterton Municipal . Brass Band (sacred concert); February 4th, "The Squaw Man"; February 18th to 23rd, * Charles Holloway Company; March 2nd and 4th, Eardley Reynolds; March 14th, St. Patrick's Concert. During his absence from the colony, the Premier's portfolios will be distributed for administrative purposes as follows:—Colonial Treasurer, Hon. W. Hall-Jones; Commerce and Tourists, Hon. J. McGowan; Advances to Settlers, Hon, J. Carroll; Public Trust and Friendly Societies, Hon. J. A. pillar; Defence, Hon. R. McNab; Old Age Pensions, Hon. G. Fowlds; Post and Telegraph and Electoral, Hon. Dr. Findlay. Passengers to Wellington by the train that left Masterton on Tuesday last at 7.50 a.m. complain of the in sufficient number of carriages provided. They state that after the train had left Carterton, standing room only was obtainable. The usual 7 a.m. train did not run on the morning in question, and they maintain that 1 had the Department despatched this train, as well as the 7.50 train, the overcrowding of which they complain would not have occurred. The matter will probably be brought before the next meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce. The By-laws Committee of the Borough Council met last 'night. There were present:—Cr McEwen (chairman), and Crs Temple, Ewington, and Morris. It was decided to recommend so far as business premises are concerned, "that the 'brick area' be Queen Street, Waipoua River to Russell Street, Dixon Street and Chapel Street, 200 feet east and west respectively, to the Makora Creek, Cole Street to the first creek, and a block between Chapel . Street and the railway line, contained within a line running 200 feet on the south side of Perry and Pine Streets, and a line running 200 feet on the norths side of Lincoln Road; a proviso to be added to the by-laws accordingly, and provision to be made that the Council may by special resolution, publicly notified, extend the area to any other parts of the Borough from time to time." The quarterly meeting of the Masterton Cemetery Trustees was held yesterday afternoon, there' being present:-—Messrs E. Feist (chairman), C. E. Daniell, W. Sellar, P. Gordon, A. R. Bunny and W. Perry. An apology for absence was received from Mr A. Stempa, who is confined to his bed through illness. The Trustees expressed regi'et at Mr Stempa's illness, and decided to hold over his notice of motion with i-egard to closing the present cemetery and procuring a new site until the next quarterly meeting. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £BS 3s 2d. Accounts amounting to £llO Is 9d were passed for payment. The secretary submitted a balancesheet for the year ended December 31st, which showed that the receipts for the year had been £l7B 0s lid; the disbursements £213 7s 3d; credit balance at the beginning of the year 1906, £IOB 13s 6d; credit balance at the end of the year 1906, £73 7s 2d. John Ross, who was thefirst Presbyterian minister in the Wairarapa, will preach at Knox; Church, Masterton, to-morrow morning. His many old friends will be glad of an opportunity to see and, hear him. The Rev. A. T. Thompson, will conduct the evening service; at Knox Church, and the afternoon service at Dreyerton. Mr M. Gordon will officiate at Wangaehu. Postcards bearing on* their back imitations of New Zealand postage stamps will be accepted by the postal; authorities for transmission within, the colony only. This concession, will be withdrawn when the present, stock of cards is exhausted. Delivery of such cards beyond NewZealand is forbidden by international regulation. Any cards posted for oversea are detained and sent to theDead Letter Office. A meeting of > creditors in the estate of Henry Stratton Izard: was held at Greytown on Thursday. The Deputy Official Assignee (Mr W. B: Chennells) reported that investigations by an accountant and himself* showed bankrupt's private expenditure to have been £9,000 and losses by betting £16,654, total £25,654. The estate is expected to realise £2,000, and the expenses will be just under £I,OOO. The centenary of the Brigidine Order of Nuns will be celebrated.on February Ist. The Sisters atvSt. Bride's Convent, ; Masterton, who "belonggto the Order, contemplated Hold- v ing some celebration to commemor>ate the anniversary, but owing to the fact that the statue of the Blessed Virgin, which is to be erected in the Convent grounds, will not arrive until later in the year, the Sisters have decided to postpone thecelebration of the anniversary unfiL the statue is erected. The Commissioner of Crown Lands notifies that several sections in the Pohangina district, about 15 .miles . from Ashhurst, will be open for selection on the optional system on February 27th next. The first term of the Wellintgon College will begin on Friday, February Ist. The headmaster will receive parents and guardians at the College on Wednesday next from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. At 2 o'clock, to-day, Messrs R. E. Howell and Co. will resume the sale of the surplus ' stock on account of Messrs McLeod and Young. The sale will be held in their old premises, and all the lines will be offered without reserve. Owing to Tuesday last having been a holiday, the 'Masterton Rifle Volunteers will not hold their ordinary trophy shooting competition to-day. The ' Redeniptorist Fathers will conduct a mission at St. Patrick's Church, Masterton, commencing on February 10th. • The Masterton Rifle Volunteers held. a muster parade, last evening, when the arms issued to the corps were deposited in the Drill Hall for . inspection by the Armourer-Sergeant. By the Matatua, which will leave ; Wellington on January 31st, the Dalefield Company will despatch 350 cases of cheese, Parkvale 200, Belvedere 200 and Taratahi 79 cases. ** Twenty-five persons will come up for trial at the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court to be opened at Wellington next Monday week, February 4th. There are also four persons awaiting sentence for self-con-fessed crimes. The Hon. R. McNab denies a statement that has been made to the effect that he has taken the meat inspection out of Mr Gilruth's hands and placed it in the hands of unqualified men.
