MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
MASTERTON-FRIDAY. (Before Mr W. P. James, S.M.) A man, named George Groves, alias George Williams, was charged, at the Masterton Magistrate's Court, yesterday afternoon, with having forged a certain document, on or about January 10th, and uttering the same to R. E. Howell on January 14th, and also with having obtained, on January 14th, the sum of £3 by false pretences from R. E. Howell. The evidence of Robert E. Howell and Norman H. James (clerk at R. E. Howell and Co.'s) went to show that on the date in question accused presented an order on "Hill and C 0.," Dannevirke, for £3, at R. E. Howeli and Co.'s office., Accused was given £3 on the order. Enquiries made at Dannevirke elicited the fact that there was no such firm as" "Hill and Co." at Dannevirke, but a Mr Hill was found who said that the order "was not his, and he did not know the accused." Constable Townsend stated that when arrested accused said his name was Groves and not Williams. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed, in one surety of £SO and two others sureties at £SO each.
