VALEDICTORY SOCIAL. LEGISLATIVE' COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. ' WELLINGTON, January 24. Sir J. G. Ward was entertained, to-night, at a Valedictory Social on the eve of his departure to attend the Conference of Premiers at London. The gathering took place at the Parliamentary Buildings, and was very largely attended. The Mayor of Wellington (Hon. T. W. Hislop) presided. Sir Joseph Ward, who was received with loud applause, said that the revenue for the last nine months ex- ! cesded that for the same period last year by £612,418, and he estimated that the surplus to credit on March 31.tj would be £529,795. Speaking with reference, to the position of the Legislative Council, the Premier said that of the fourteen recent vacancies, five) members had been North Island representatives and nine South Island. In their recommendations to the Governor the Ministry had proposed that eight should be appointed from the North Island and six from the South, j The appointments that had been made were as follows: W. McCardle, farmer, of Kawhia. Captain W. H. Tucker, farmer, of Gisbome. Wi Pere, of Gisborne. , O. Samuel, lawyer, New Plymouth. Dr. W. E. Collins, Wellington. C. M. Luke, iron manufacturer, Wellington. Hamilton Gilmer, Wellington. Robert Loughnan, journalist, Wellington. George J. Smith, ex-M.H.R., Christchurch. John Barr, President of the Trades Council, Christchurch. John Anstey, farmer, Otipua, Timaru. £ J. R. Sinclair, lawyer, Dunedin. • J. T. Paul, compositor, Dunedin. | J. B. Callan, lawyer, Dunedin.
