MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCILLORS.
CR EWINGTON'S PROPOSAL. NO SECONDER FORTHCOMING. At the meeting, of the Master ton Borough Council, last evening, Cr Ewington moved that the number of Councillors be increased from nine to twelve. Cr Ewington spoke in support of his resolution at some length. An increase in the number of Councillors would not mean an increase in cost to the ratepayers. Though he had been favourable at first to the Council as a committee of the whole dealing with the business he had 'found that it did not work satisfac- ' torily. More committees were required to carry out special work. He suggested that the following committees should be formed:—Gas, library, firebrigade, v/ater and drainage, abat- * toir, works, finance, park and reserves. Every Councillor must recognise, that there should be a change in the management and more Councillors were wanted. He was sorry the Mayor was not present at the meeting. The Mayor intended to oppose his motion. He had discussed the matter with Mr Renall-and the latter had agreed with him that more Councillors were required, but he would not support a motion increasing the number of Councillors because the proposal emanated from a quarter he did not approve of. Cr Feist: What' quarter was Mr Renall referring to? Cr Ewington: Do you wish to know? Cr~Feist: Oh no,, not particularly, only—. Cr Ewington: Oh, I'll tell you, if you wish to know. The reason why Mr Renall would not support a scheme such as I advocate is because the Daily Times suggested it. There was no secondei: to the motion. Cr Ewington: All right, I shall bring it along again when I get a seconder.
