AUCKLAND ORCHESTRAL L SOCIETY'S CONCERT. HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S EXHIBIT. ATHLETIC SPORTS MEETING. . RECORD ENTRIES. By Telegraph—Special Service. , \ CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. The Auckland Orchestral Society, which gave its first concert at the Exhibition last evening, achieved a signal success, both the instrumentalists and the soloist (Madame Wielart) winning golden opinions for their artistic performance. There was a very large attendance. Mr Hamilton Hodges, vocalist, was not present, having missed the connection with the train at \New Plymouth, but he arrived to-da,y, and will take part in the Society's concerts to-night and tomorrow night. The Exhibition Orchestra was enthusiastically greeted by a crowded audience yesterday, and the attendance at its performances grow larger as .the time for its temporary departure from Christchurch draws near. The Besses o' th' Barn Band played very attractive programmes on the Sports Ground last night and again this afternoon, large attendances being present on each occasion. The Band will give the final concert of the present season on the Sports Ground to-morrow night, when the Governor will be present,, and special items will be played at his request. An exceptionally fine display of Pain's (London) fireworks will be given in conjunction with the Band's perform-: ance. To-day the Exhibition has been well attended. , The Wanganui' Maoris in. the pah have established their popularity and their daily performances of poi dances and hakas draw large cz-owds. The Health Department's exhibit, the preparation of which has been delayed till now by the late arrival of many of the "articles, is now practically completed. The articles were secured for Exhibition purposes by Dr. Valintine and Inspector Middleton during their recent visit to England, and though all the objects promised have not come to hand, sufficient have arrived to enable a very interesting and highly-educative display to be made. The principal exhibits are an ambulance brougham manufactured by a London firm, which resembles in appearance an ordinary closed carriage, but contains every up-to-date apparatus and convenience for dealing with cases. All sorts of details are provided for, including a speaking tube to the driver. A method of construction has been adopted which will enable the whole vehicle to be disinfected easily and the carriage can be used as well for fever cases as for accidents. Another prominent exhibit is the disinfector to be installed in the Christchurch Consumption Sanatorium. The : Court also contains models of sewage and drainage apparatus and sanitary appliances, including a number of small portable disinfectors for rooms, schoolhouses, etc. Six hundred entries have been received for the New Zealand Athletic Union's sports meeting on Thursday and Saturday next. For the New Zealand Exhibition Championship, of 135 yards, there will be forty starters, which is said to be a record number for the colony for a race of that kind. The value of the first prize (£4O) is also said to be a record for such an event. The Southland Pipe Band arrived to-night to take part in the Pipe Band Contest in connection with the meeting. The Oamaru, Timaru, and Waitara Pipe Bands are expected to arrive tomorrow. The Quickstep Competition will be decided on Thursday afternooon, and the Selection Contest on the Thursday night. The judges for the Pipe Band Competition are Messrs Struan Robertson (Christchurch), C. Starrock (Christchurch), and T. Milne (Kurow); and for the militaiy contests Captains Finnis and Salter. West's Pictures and, the Brescians will commence a fortnight's season •in the Concert Hall on Thursday next.
