THE COOKTOWN CYCLONE. Received January 22, 10.25 a.m. BRISBANE, January 22. Further Government telegrams from Cooktown state that a child was killed by the cyclone. The Mayor has wired to the Mayor of Brisbane asking for relief, as a number of people are homeless and destitute. Twelve inches of rain fell during the hurricane. NAVAL DEFENCE. Received January 22, 10.23 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 22. Referring to Sir Joseph Ward's announcement that New Zealand intends to increase its naval subsidy, Mr Maugher, Acting Minister of Defence, says that whatever New Zealand's attitude may be, Australia means to possess a coastal defence fleet at an early date. The Commonwealth cannot afford to depend entirely on the British fleet, which may in an emergency be ordered out of these seas. MR DEAKIN'S TRIP HOME. The Ministerialists are seeking an understanding with the Labour party to secure an adjournment of the Federal Parliament to enable Mr Deakin to proceed to London. The extra heat to decide the La Carabine Cup will be sailed to-mor-row, the course being ten miles to windward and back. The Heather will not compete. There was a steady south-west breeze and a smooth sea. The RaWhiti and , S.J.S. were the only competitors. The latter had an allowance of 30min 4sec. The local boat was out of the race 'before half the distance had been covered, mainly owing to bad judgment in sticking to the coast between Brighton and Half-moon Bay. After deducting the time allowance the Rawhiti won by llmin 45sec, securing the. Cup. THE RABBIT EXPERIMENTS. Received January 22, 10.18 a.m. SYDNEY, January 22. The Danysz experiments have proved conclusively that animals and birds are immune from rabbit disease. The majority of two hundred and fifty rabbits on a separate run died through contamination with an affected rabbit. This is regarded as an important test. SYDNEY WOOL SALE. MARKET EXCITED. Received January 23, 12.25 a.m. SYDNEY, January 22. Over 11,000 bales were catalogued to-day at the wool sale. The market was excited, and there was keen competition at late rates.
