Owing to the flood waters covering l the pumping station, it is impossible to keep the reservoir filled, and no water is available at present either for household or fire prevention purposes. If more rain falls the position will be serious. It will be some days before trains will resume running. The Railway Department has arranged a steamer service on the river to take passengers past the damaged portion of the line. WANGANUI, January 18. A sudden change in the weather took place to-day, and the thermometer dropped from 78 to 60. The weather to-night is decidedly wintry. WELLINGTON, January 18. The weather changed considerably to-day. A strong southerly breeze blew all day, and to-night it is decidedly cold.
