_ * ■ BUTTER AND CHEESE FACTORIES. Comparison of the results shown byreturns collected at the census of 1906 with that of 1901 shows great development. Not only did the number of factories increase from 247 to 264 between 1901 and 1906, besides skimming stations in connection with them—4s9 against 202 — but the value of the output rose to £1,046,489 over the amount for 1901. The figures are £2,581,639 for ,1905 against £1,535,150 for 1900. The produce of factory-made butter for 1905 was: set down at 51,813,6071b, and for 1900 at 29,758,3101b, v/hile . cheese made a similar increase from 139,687cwtt0 150,061cwt in the same period. By far the greater number of factories for making butter are in the North Island, the number having been 196 out of a total of 264, which turned out 40,300,0001b of butter in the year 1905, leaving nearly 11,500,0001b as the output for the Middle Island. Taranaki is the provincial district in which the operations are by, far the largest, 16,400,0001b of butter being the result of the factory operations, and over 42,500ewt of cheese. Wellington factories show for 1905 a total of over 12,100,0001b of butter and 34,700 cwt of cheese. Otago makes more cheese (49,600cwt) in her.factories than any other district. The butter was found to be a little over 35,600,0001bs for the year, v The money invested for the purposes of this industry in land, buildings, machinery, and plant, has largely increased. The Besses o' th' Barn Band gave a performance before a large attendance this afternoon, and in the evening, despite the threatening weather, about . fifteen hundred people assembled to hear them On Wednesday next, which will be the last night of the Band's season, it is > proposed to hold a big display of fireworks in connection with their concert. Some special fireworks to musical accompaniment will also be . given, Eain and Sons (London) haying combined with the Besses o' th' Barn Band in the Old Country in such entertainments. A display of aerial fireworks will be given on Friday night. Miss Florence Quinn, a young New Zealand soprano, whose •voice so charmed the late Premier on his visit to Bendigo, sang several numbers at the Orchestral Concert this evening, and was most enthusiastically received by a crowded audience. She will be heard at three concerts at the Exhibition next week. The electric light contractors are now arranging forty-nine clusters of 316 candle power coloured lamps along the trees in front of the building. This was. part of the original lighting contract, but owing; to the shortage of current it has not been possible to instal these illuminations before. The Axemen's Carnival will be held on Thursday and Saturdaynext. Half the total competitors are champions. Oh Thursdaynight "Wonderland's" Floral Fete and the sensational fire rescue act will take place. There are ninety competitors in the Athletic Union's 1 Gathering on January 24th, and 26th, representing 170 entries.
