-STOCK REPORT, '. Mr W. -Rose reports as follows: During the. past fortnight I have held ,the following sales. Saturday, January sth, Dannevirke horse sale: Owing to falling so near the holidays there was only a ..small entry, but the attendance was fairland mostly all were sold. Light draughts up to £24, light harness horses up to £5, hacks £5 and upwards. January 7th, Norsewood stock ;sale: Being the opening of the new yarcls there was a good yarding of both sheep and cattle, and also a very representative attendance. The sale went with a good swing throughout and practically every line was cleared under the hammer at the following prices:—Sheep: Fat ewes 15s and 14s Bd. Cattle: Three and 4-year--old steers £5 15s, 2 to 2J-year-old steers £3 2s 6d, 18-months steers £2 4s 6d to £2 8s 6d, fat cows £3 15s to £4, yearlings 355, weaners 18s 6d, springing heifers £3 3s 6d, forward cows £2 18s, cows in profit £2 17s 6d to £4. ; January 11th, Dannevirke stock sale: A big entry of both sheep and cattle came forward, but owing no doubt to the dry weather competition under the hammer was very dull, nevertheless a number of lines were cleared after the sale at the following prices. Sheep: Fat ewes 14s and 14s 6d, ewes and lambs (all counted) 9s, 2-tooth forward wethers 14s 6d, -2-tooth ewes lis 5d to 10s 6d, fat cows £3 4s to ££4 17s 6d, 18-month steers £2 3s 6d, store cows 21s to 30s, yearlings to 15-month steers 30s ..to 355. Pigs: Weaners, 13s and 14s. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and 'Commerce has received the following •cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 12th inst.: — The mutton market is quiet, but •there has been a better tone in the market during the past week. .27,836 carcases of New Zealand mutton arrived. Light weight Canterbury is scarce and quoted at s£d, and heavy weights-at 4Jd per lb. The average price of North Island mutton is 41<3 for light weights, and 4£d per lb for heavy weights. Shipments from the River Plate are heavy, and are quoted at 3|d per lb for light weights and at 3|d for heavy weights. Arrivals, 107,082 carcases. Australian lamb is in large supply. Arrivals, 173,534 carcases. The price is 4|d per lb. , The beef market is steady. Trade :is good and likely to continue so. The average price of New Zealand beef is 3§d and 3gd per lb for hind and fore quarters, respectively. The butter market is steady and there is a better demand. A large supply of Australian make is pushed for sales, which affects the market very seriously. Choice New Zealand is quoted at 107s, Argentine 106s, Australian JOOs and Danish 118s per cwt. There is a poorer demand for saltless butter at 3s per cwt. less than these quotations. The cheese market is firm.,-New Zealand makes are giving satisfaction to buyers. There is a good demand for all descriptions and prices are advancing. The average price of New Zealand is 63s per cwt. > The hemp -market is steady and business prospects are good. Good fair grade on spot is quoted at £39 per ton and fair current Manilla at £ 42 10s per ton. ' The cocksfoot seed market is'quiet, but firm.' Clean, bright dressed 171b seed is quoted at 48s per cwt. ■- The current quotations for Bradford Tops are: —36's low crossbreds, Is 4fd per lb; 40's low crossbreds, Is 6cTper lb; 44's medium crossbred, Is 6d per lb; 50's half bred, Is lOd . per lb; 56's quarter-bred, 2s Id per lb; 60's merinos, 2s 3£d per lb. The wool market is strong.
