THE AMEER OF AFGHANISTAN.

Received January 13, 5.10 p.m. CALCUTTA, January 12. Upon learning that the Mohammedans intended to sacrifice one hundred cows to celebrate his participation in the festival, the Ameer urgently requested that none of these animals should be slaughtered but that goats should be substituted. This request was made in order to avoid all offence to Hindu religious feeling. The Hindus, who at the outset of the Ameer's visit to India were among the first to strew his path with flowers, warmly appreciate the consideration thus shown for their feelings, which is likely to produce a remarkable effect upon coreligionists throughout India.
