CRICKET. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. The message from Wellington published yesterday to' the effect that at a meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association the previous night it was resolved to appoint a manager to conduct the M.C.C. cricket team for the remainder of the tour after the next Wellington match, the New Zealand Cricket Council having refused to do so, is somewhat inaccurate and misleading. Mr F. C. Raphael, the hon. secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council, explains that a committee of the council set up to arrange for the tour of the team, at a meeting held last week, appointed him to manage the team during its journey over the West Coast up to Auckland and back again to Christchurch. Mr H. D. Bell, the president of the Wellington Cricket Association, was present at the meeting, and undertook that a manager would be appointed to accompany the team from Wellington to Hawke's Bay and back at no expense to the council. That was what had been done at the meeting of the Wellington Association. "I was very much surprised, when I read the message," added Mr Raphael, "for it is very misleading, not only to the team, but also to the public; and I cannot understand why such a telegram should have been sent."
